Re: Boats Less Than $30K Recent Noteworthy Finds

1990 Hunter 33.5 Sail Boat For Sale - www.yachtworld.com

I’m not sure that I’m posting in here correctly, but this is the boat that I’m looking at buying as my first purchase.

I’m 6’3 and it’s the only boat in my price range which allows me to stand up.

Found this today, just posted it seems.

https://newyork.craigslist.org/lgi/b...512227894.html

Pearson 30. Old of course but appears well maintained. No indication of year built Assuming the sails are in usable shape there is a good inventory. I like Pearson's as the hull is solid and thickly laid. At least my 76' is that way and I assume this is the same. So this looks like a sail away coastal cruiser for $5500 asking. Downside is the Palmer engine, gas and I would doubt parts are readily available.

Until recently, I owned one of these old Pearson 30 sailboats. Without a doubt, a great boat. Easy to sail, forgiving, strong, FAST, well built. Just really 70's ugly below. But in a blow it was a delight. I think most came with Atomic 4, but mine had a newer volvo 2002 which ran great. Encapsulated keel means no keel bolts to fail. Original rig and gear was built strong. Decent layout below, and lots of space below. I'm actually kicking myself now for selling. I should have held on to it and sailed it south. Now I'm starting all over again when I had a perfectly good boat already.

I owned the 35.5 (1994)...very similar boat. LOVED it. Great boat. You will be very happy. Good choice.

1982 Cape Dory 33' Cutter Sail Boat For Sale - www.yachtworld.com

Seems underpriced, the listing describes the aggressive price as being due to needed maintenance. but doesn't sound too bad; deck leaks, possible soft spots, cabin sole, exhaust hose and a squirrel came aboard and did some damage.

Nothing wrong with that at 90% savings for a quality-built boat, as long as it's still fundamentally sound.

Many sailors don't have 100+k in hand to get started

What do you think of these?

The Pearson Flattop P40. $18000.00 This one is listed as 4'8" draft of which i've not saw before on this model without a centerboard.

Pearson 40 is the famous whale body. With the board up the draw about 4 feet.

Ok, thanks.
While you are here, what type of rudder is this on the P40? There's a bit of a skeg to it however it looks to be for a reinforced attachment.

The Pearson 30 was made from 1971 to 1981. I owned a boat identical to the one in the ad (see my pic posted above). It was a 1974. Most are from the early 70's when production was high and people were buying boats. So that Pearson 30 for sale is around 40 years old. With this model, that means it should have new standing rigging and a repower by now. There will also be a deck issue in the cockpit floor around the rudder post, which was not sealed well at the factory, and is/was a problem on just about every boat. Other than than, a thick hulled, solid vessel, suitable of coastal cruising.

Ta Chiao CT 35 Ketch

Year = 1980
Location = Deltaville Virginia
Asking Price = $24.999
___________________________

Steady's Notes

The photos of the boat show a nice looking boat, in what appears to be good condition. As with any boat, a survey is a good idea. Caveat Emptor.

I like what I see in the photos. There are more photos showing the interior and cockpit and details on the linked page.

This is a full keel, traditional styled boat.
It has teak decks.

From what is shown in the photos, it appears to be in a very good condition, or well kept, compared to most other boats this age. The interior looks nice, engine looks clean.

Notice the list of gear down below. Several popular items cruisers typically add to a boat are already there, and I have bolded them below.

As with any boat, it is a good idea to research the design to learn about how they sail, common problems and owner opinions.
As with any boat, it is smart to have a qualified yacht surveyor perform a survey of the boat to assess its condition.
I am posting this to help others find boats. This one caught my eye, and I hope this thread helps others find a good fit for them.
I hope this thread proves helpful to CF Members. If so, let me know, as it is nice to know the time spent on it has helped others.
IF you purchase this boat, let me know (a PM would be OK).
IF you purchase this boat, I would enjoy seeing it, or going for a sail on it, if I am ever in your area. Or, if you own a similar or sister boat send me a PM. I enjoy sailing on a wide variety of boats and would like to get some time on many designs, including this one.

I like what I see in the photos. There are more photos showing the interior and cockpit and details on the linked page. However, notice that some of the photos are from 2005! Consequently, the boat may not appear today, as it does in those photos. Caveat Emptor.

Note: This is a boat with a saildrive. The saildrive appears to have been replaced in 2005 (or so).

It has a skeg hung rudder, something cruisers many prefer.

A lot of boat for the money. I suspect that the teak decks are probably the reason for that. Injectadeck could be the answer to buying boats like this. You might even be able to use it without pulling up the teak. Just drill & bung it when you're done. If it works as advertised it could turn a crazy big job into something really manageable.
