Re: Boats Less Than $30K Recent Noteworthy Finds

Morgan 382

________________

Steady's Notes

1. This Morgan 382 just had the price dropped substantially to a new low price. NOTE the interior condition, the cruising gear, professional paint (Awlgrip) Bimini, and the low price. Overall, this appears to be a boat in very good condition at a very good price.

2. Red Awlgrip Hull

3. Some good cruising gear (check the listing) Maxwell Windlass, davits, GPS, AC/Heat, etc.

3. This model has a separate shower in the head. (see photo on ad)

Re: Boats Less Than $30K Recent Noteworthy Finds

ODay 31

Steady's Notes
1. This is the first boat of this model I have posted in this thread. I am doing so because it appears to be in very good condition and fits the needs of many people who are looking for a bay and coastal cruising boat that is Asking Price Less than $30K. I see a lot of people join CF looking for some small, inexpensive boat for live aboard. While this boat would not be my choice for a circumnavigation or crossing oceans, it does look like it would be comfortable for marina living on a small boat.

2. I like the swim step stern.

3. This boat looks like a good match for bay sailing and some coastal cruising. Notice that it has a relatively small, low HP Diesel Engine and small tankage for water and fuel.

Re: Boats Less Than $30K Recent Noteworthy Finds

O'Day 37 CC

Steady's Notes

1. I often see new members on CF asking about a boat that has an aft cabin double berth (for privacy) and at relatively low cost.

2. This boat does have an aft cabin with a double athwartship berth and a private head with shower (hose, not stall).

3. This boat appears to be in very good condition for its age and price point and when compared to others of this age and model I have seen. That is why I am sharing this one here on CF, to illustrate a good example of this model.

4. I got a chuckle when reading the ad for this boat, as the broker wrote "low engine hours" as a key feature of the boat. It has 3,263 hours according to the details on the boat.

5. The details for this boat lists 10 opening ports with 3 hatches. I like opening ports for ventilation.

6. The boat lists with a wind generator, GPS, some electronics, refrigeration, etc. See the details.

7. The boat has nice engine access via a removable panel in the aft cabin.

new lifelines 2014
new loose footed fully battened mainsail 2010 in excellent condition
150% genny in good condition
110% genny that is currently ripped (I was having too much fun in 30 knots!)
beautiful asymmetrical with snuffer
rebuilt universal m40b 680 hours on it
new interior fabric
watermaker (not installed but on the boat)
drogue
80w solar panel
all new trojan t105 batteries 2014
new start battery 2014
new interior ceiling 2014
new popance system ABYC standards 2013
new airhead composting head 2013
dickinson newport diesel heater
insulated v berth
fortress, bruce and spade anchors plus 200 feet of chain as well as assorted rope rode
every fitting on this boat has been removed and rebedded in West Systems and the deck is free from delamination or water intrusion
the bottom has been stripped and barrier coated in 2010 so absolutely no chance of blistering.

70 gal of fuel 50+20 gal aux tank
80 gal water
no friggin holding tank.

8 foot west marine dinghy and 5hp 4 stroke mercury that can get 1 person up on a plane. This is the right tender for this boat since you can roll it up and store it down below for a crossing. It is very nice not to have to have it on deck when it is blowing.

Only Caveat on this boat is that she needs an engine alignment. Other than that she's ready to go!

She's in Green Cove Springs and newly back from the Bahamas. It would literally take two weeks to get this boat rigged out and motored to West Palm where you can jump off to the Bahamas and be in heaven.

I'm thinking 22k OBO.
I ended up selling this boat and now I am looking for a 30k West Coast center cockpit or pilothouse for my wife, my upcoming baby, and I! Let me know what you guys dig up. Psyched for this new chapter.

See post #672 in this thread. Skookum pilot house.

It is one of the nicest smaller 32' Pilot House boats I have seen, fits your budget.

If your baby is put in the Vberth, you would be close because of the double berth near it midship. I think that is better than an aft cabin for infant care. The inside helm position and view looks nice. I would convert one side of the Vberth to a playpen and sleep area.

Thank YOU (and others too) for the positive response to this thread.

And thank YOU and others too for contributing what you each do to this community. I learn something new from you ALL each day.

One thing my search for this thread has shown me is that there are some nice looking and equipped boats on the market for $30K or less. I think that should give some hope to those who are looking for a boat that is in good condition (not a big project boat) and within a smaller budget.

Fair Winds!

Re: Boats Less Than $30K Recent Noteworthy Finds

S2 11.0 (36 ft) Aft Cockpit
__________________

Steady's Notes

1. I have posted another boat of this model before. There were some minor differences. I like the interior layout and finish for this type of boat and size and price point.

2. I am posting this one because I want to include the list of things (Updates and Improvements) that the ad says have been done to the boat (refit) as it may help others see how many small items may need to be fixed or repaired on ANY boat they purchase that is used, especially if the boat is more than 10 years old. That list of items may help a buyer look at this boat and at others too, that may need similar maintenance.

3. There are two versions and some variations on engine types. A = Aft Cabin. (The S2 11.0 C is a center cockpit version.)
Shoal draft version: 4.67'/1.42m.
Delivered with Universal, Volvo, or Yanmar engines.

4. This boat layout has a Quarter Berth and Navigation Station (you sit on the quarter berth while at the Nav table).

5. I like the layout for the galley. Look for more images online to see the layout (as the ad only has one photo that does not show the sink location).

Re: Boats Less Than $30K Recent Noteworthy Finds

Moody 34CC

Steady's Notes

1. The Moody 34CC has a nice interior and layout for its size. I like it. The design of a 34 foot center cockpit boat requires some careful use of scale and features to fit in an aft cabin into a boat that is under 35 feet LOA.

2. Nice use of wood in the interior. The interior looks nicer than some Center Cockpit boats I have seen from US brands that are this size.

3. Note that this boat has a walkthrough passage to the aft cabin with double berth.

4. Boat has a single head, located near the ladder from the Center Cockpit.

5. This ad does not have the best photos I have seen for this model of boat. You could get a better idea of this model's use of space and finnish if you look at sister boats online. The photos of this particular boat are OK, and the boat appears to be in good, clean condition, but the photos don't show the boat features as well as others I have seen.

6. The boat is built in the UK and comes with a Lloyd's Certificate. It also comes with a Thornycroft Diesel engine.

My Disclaimers and Requests:

I have no financial or other connection to this boat or the seller.
I have not seen this boat in person, nor have I sailed on it.
As with any boat, it is a good idea to research the design to learn about how they sail, common problems and owner opinions.
As with any boat, it is smart to have a qualified yacht surveyor perform a survey of the boat to assess its condition.
I am posting this to help others find boats. This one caught my eye, and I hope this thread helps others find a good fit for them.
I hope this thread proves helpful to CF Members. If so, let me know, as it is nice to know the time spent on it has helped others.
IF you purchase this boat, let me know (a PM would be OK).
IF you purchase this boat, I would enjoy seeing it, or going for a sail on it, if I am ever in your area. Or, if you own a similar or sister boat send me a PM. I enjoy sailing on a wide variety of boats and would like to get some time on many designs, including this one.
Good luck on your own boat hunt.

Re: Boats Less Than $30K Recent Noteworthy Finds

Moodys are exceptionally well made yachts. Solid hulls with a great reputation. If you are in the States there are no reliable parts suppliers for the Thornycroft so be prepared to wait a week or two for parts to come from England.

Thanks for adding your comment about the Moody boats.

I was not sure about the availability of Thornycroft parts in the USA. That is important info for any potential buyers in the USA.
I know they are common engines on boats I see in the UK.

Re: Boats Less Than $30K Recent Noteworthy Finds

A little known fact is that in older larger Moodys they installed the 50hp Thornycroft which was the BMC engine bock used in London Taxis. Beep beep!

Re: Boats Less Than $30K Recent Noteworthy Finds

1984 Tartan 33
US$ 27,900
Superior, WI

I admit I really like the look of this boat, and she is exactly what I am looking for in terms of size, features, price and location. I’ve been watching her for a while and the price just dropped $10k. I would want to know why that happened – PA fell through on survey issues? Increasingly motivated seller? She seems priced below comps now. There are other Tartan 33s for sale at the same location.

Unfortunately I am not quite in the position to buy yet. If I was, I’d be taking a look at her for sure. It looks like an ideal weekend cruising boat for Lake Superior, perfect for my wife and I until we can escape to full time cruising.

The good:
The brand seems to have a good reputation for seaworthiness.
To my eye the T33 looks stout and well thought out.

It's nice to see a bimini(?) already there as I would want to add one otherwise.

The exterior teak looks in great shape, which seems to be rare at this price point. That is in an indication to me of likely good maintenance in other areas and systems.

The interior overall looks bright and clean.

Upholstery looks to be in fine shape.

I know the T33s have a reputation for having a small, awkward head, but this seems acceptable at this size. I really like the hanging locker that I believe drains into the shower sump – nice feature.

My wife, the primary chef, really likes L shape galleys like this. We’d prefer a double sink, but that’s not a deal breaker, especially in this size range.

That deck looks well cared for and in beautiful shape.

Nice new-looking VHF. Again, not a big deal in and of itself, but an indication that the PO cares about safety.

The neutral:
The instruments and autopilot overall seem OK. It’s hard for me to tell how good a shape they are in

How old is that radar? My understanding is the older ones are power hogs so I don't know how useful it would be. Still, a potentially useful tool to learn with.

The bad:
The engine is original, so who knows. It looks to be well cared for, but at that age it seems foolhardy to not plan on a full overhaul at least or repowering.

I know it’s only cosmetic but that engraved name on the companionway board looks hideous. Something would need to be done about that. On the plus side, look at how good the finish is!

I really wish I could make a move on this boat

Re: Boats Less Than $30K Recent Noteworthy Finds

Tough and capable boats. A cousin circumnavigated in the one he built and had a great trip. Hit a reef in the South Pacific and collided with a freighter in Malta, but had no problems with the boat.
