Yep, I think she is a Ranger 23,very first boat I ever owned (my first love!). She is a sweet boat and well worth fixing up. Touted as an offshore racer she sailed like a dream, never needed auto pilot, with the right sail trim she balanced out beautifully! Use to sail up and off anchor, lived out in the bay until food and water ran out and forced me back to shore. Dang, I gotta dig up a picture of her. Lived on her for over three years, learned how to dress lying down or discretely standing in the forward hatch..ah thems were good times.

looks more like an islander 26 or 28--the perry designed ones. had one--looked just like that only i had stained glass in my ports.

Pretty close to a Ranger, but ours has a bow that looks sharper, and it's missing the metal toerail, but that could have been removed.

The rudder looks wrong. And the keel isn't angled right.

Z and Sarah
you are right, comparing my Ranger 23 -her deck looks just like her, seahood, toerail the same (mine had a teak halfround cap), ports and markings the same, but the keel is all wrong, too shallow, wrong shape, and no rake in the keel. I thought I had a skeg but can't remember(it has been 20 years - yikes).

Feral, walk up to her stern and jot down her hull numer, should be starboard stern transom.

Sarah, do you still have your Ranger? I loved mine, the perfect boat to learn how to sail in.

Maybe it's just me, but that boat looks more like a 30ish footer than a 23 footer. For one thing, I have never seen a 23 footer with such a substantial keel, considering both depth and length.

What it is definitely NOT:

Catalina, Hunter, Bene, Tartan.

Probably not a Pearson, Islander or Ericson either.

I'm guessing US built, probably not European.

Rangers are substanttial boats(says the girl that loved her Ranger). Look at her seahood to forward hatch space, very short (like my ranger) it could be a 26...though still think she is a Ranger 23.

Sarah, have ya sailed her yet? Rip out all the gawd awlful interier carpet, paint her inside a nice clean white and go play, the Ranger sailing characteristics will spoil you rotten. She points like a demon.

Feral, get your buns over to the marina and get a hull number! My rep is in your hands so make it look like this... H7856889RANGER238877 take more pictures too, get her stern and a close up of her toe rail.

Erika

PS
I realize that I will more than likely eat my words, but I figure if I am gonna go down might as well go down in a blaze of glory...It is a Ranger 23 (or 26... really a 23)

Yes, it is likely a Ranger 26. I found several images on google that look the same from the waterline up but I can't find links. If you google Ranger 26 you should see them.

G'day all,

How about running the rego number for an ID? Don't know if NC will allow this, but it might solve the mystery.

And when you return to the marina, Feral, take a tape measure and see how long she is... that'll deal with the OAL issues!

Cheers,

Jim and Ann s/v Insatiable II lying Cairns, Qld, Oz

PS I will also admit to lusting after a R-23 back when I was sailing my Catalina 22 in SFB a long time ago.

Keel shmeel! but you are right (dagnabbit). Gary Mull designed Santanas too, the santana 25 looks very similar. That could explain how she looks just like a ranger from the waterline up but below the waterline she looks like a whole nother beast..hmm very ineresting.
