A very true remark....little has to be researched when buying a ford or chevy,new or used, you know they've been building for many years and will continue for years to come and they deliver a fair product at a good price..
Beneteau and Hunter are the same, as are the Catalinas..
If you read an add for a 1996 chevy truck, 2500 series with a long bed, you already know what you're buying..
Same as a 1986 Catalina 27 with an atomic 4...... You know what to expect befor you even see it, and you know the capable areas it will be of use
It dosent make them good or bad, just another boat..

I'll have to sound off on the "modern" production boats. Some are probably good boats that will take you anywhere, but some of the production shortcuts aren't good. I recently talked to an experienced sailer that was on a Hunter, ... due to chainplates anchored to deck instead of hull a strong wind seperated the two leaving a smile shaped hole on the side of the boat. Another Hunter due to hull flexing seperated, again at the deck only this time completely around the boat leaving a big enough gap to risk sinking if the deck was awash. These are the type of failures I wouldn't want to have 1000 miles from shore. Not that I wouldn't buy one for coastal cruising, but I would think twice before crossing an ocean in one. A more solid built boat would make me feel safer.

Hear hear , the sail by the numbers crowd.

Also in my opinion having sailed one a lot and owned the other, A hunter is a poor production boat with in my view Jeanneau at the top and Beneteau not far behind.

Ogh and my benteau had quite sufficient handholds, the worst boat that threw me around was a 20 year HR.

How about a Pearson 323, they can be had for 30k and under. I bought mine with blue water in mind and by many standards that I researched its a capable boat.

don't have much in the way of photos scanned but do have some line drawings. The photos I do have were before the refit alot less bronze and no brightwork (it is amazing the difference a couple of gallons of varnish makes).

Actually she was a malamute who was happier spending the last part of her life on a 120 acre horse farm, The paint covered up red fir rub rails, chocolate brown teak cap rails, Honduras mahogany companionway hatch, red fir boom, Sitka spruce mast....
