Re: Better to look or actually own and do?
I will second the suggestion to get an RV, and not being facetious. Traveling in an RV is a lot of fun and gets you the changing scenery and adventure, without any of those other things that you don't like. Or get a power boat. That won't take care of the weather issues, but at least you won't be heeling.

Yep...... if it wasnt for Catamarans I would seriously be looking at Motor Boats.
I love sailing but after a week or two on the lean, Its enough for me..... All that money and it wont even stand up straight....

You don't have to be as hardcore as you may be lead to believe by Hollywood or equally as sensational C.F.
The vast majority of sailboat owners I know remain safely dockside and drunk as skunks in inclement weather, make passages no more than 6 hours in length and are generally comfortable.
They still get lots of enjoyment out of there vessels without seriously risking pitch polling. The only constant seems to be that it's an expensive hobby.
Don't jump in with both feet. Try a week long keelboat course, or charter in the BVI. Get more casual exposure to the sport, and you'll see the representation online of hardcore sailors isn't really an accurate representation of the sport over all.

Re: Better to look or actually own and do?
Not sure I get the question: "better to look or actually own"...??
You either want a boat or you don't. Are you asking if you'd be happier window shopping than buying? No one can answer that for you.
From what you wrote I would guess you will be best window shopping.

Re: Better to look or actually own and do?
Tuffr2, your question seems pretty simple to me.
Don't buy anything yet.
If you can take some classes, or go out with friends, that would be best. Heeling is not bad once you get a feel for it. If you never get a feel for it, stick to catamarans and trimarans. If you do get a feel for it, try all kind of boats before you buy to see which you prefer.

Re: Better to look or actually own and do?
I saw a Seinfeld episode where one of them made a car out of boxes and then covered it with a Porsche cover. You do the same in your drive way sit our front and even say yep I own a trailerable sail boat.

Re: Better to look or actually own and do?
If your afraid of those things, you have no business on a blue water sailboat! Stay on small lakes or go with someone until the terror part of sailing just leaves you a little numb.

Re: Better to look or actually own and do?
To each his own. But for me to sail is to live poetry. To be at one with nature and to master it at the same time. To the sailor, all the negatives the op cited become positives. I have owned sailboats for over 40 years; and today, as I do every year at this time, I can hardly wait to the day soon when I take "Raison d'être" out for my first solo sail this year with a bone in my teeth: .

Why does it have to be a "bluewater" deep fryer? I have a cheap deep fryer and there are plenty of people cruising around the world with cheap deep fryers. Also, what makes a deep fryer "blue water"? Can't I just modify my cheap deep fryer to be blue water capable?

Only the "blue water" deep flyers have adequate handhold's. Without adequate handhold's on your deep fryer you will most certainly be flung to your death.

I'm not convinced. The salesman for my new modern French deep fryer says hand holds imply that you need to hold onto something.

It's about construction, high production ones are really ment for safe areas like in land areas the higher end ones are built more rugged and will with stand more punishment..

It's really not that bad. There are other movies to watch.
