I am biased, but I love the purposeful look of raw aluminium. No alcohol needed .

This is the underside of the cockpit. Some parts have only been tack welded:

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

Maybe it's the finish but it definitely had a softness to the raw aluminium after the shine dies down and it starts to show its living in a world that moves.

It's amazing watching the boat getting built though to think it was a raw material dug from the ground and turned into something that will give hopefully decades of joy. One day hopefully soon I'll be having that.

Dreamer, I hope your dreams are realised .

Yes, it is amazing to think how the material is sourced, and isn't the raw material simply beautiful! It is also amazing to think that long after we are gone, the hull may be melted down and some other beautiful item produced.

I was watching a program earlier on antiques. One of the objects was an Indian cigarette case, made by the locals by melting alu from planes shot down in WWII. Wonder what our boat will become one day?

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

It wasn't antiques road show was it? I watched an episode that had a watch case made from metal that originally came from ammunition casing that was left behind after World War Two and had been hand made just before stamping was made common. Amazingly beautiful hand made watch case.

I hope that your boat continues life as a boat for as long as it can and that after you it finds a place in someone else's heart who will see it as something to treasure and pass on.

I think aluminium and even steel win out over fibreglass or carbon fibre, the ease with which it can be taken and changed just can't be replicated in a boat and now that I'm here looking at and admiring aluminium boats I want one hahaha

Yes, it was Antiques Roadshow I think - I was multitasking and only had one eye on it. My ears pricked up when aluminium was mentioned .

Thanks for your good wishes.

These are the other two shots of the rear.

Dozens of details here for us to pour over :

Upside down:

And flipped the right way.
The ventilated gas locker on the port side at the rear will be capable of storing 4 x 16kg bottles:

So do I.

Work boat/military vessel from the outside.

Yacht on the inside.

That's the way I want my next boat to look.

Dashew's power boats are like that; shame they don't have sails.

But that look is not for everyone.

No, it's not for everyone, but the FPBs rate highly for me too.

Our exterior may be lean, mean and purposeful, but the interior will be luxurious. Solid timber (African Bubinga hardwood throughout), navy leather, white "planked" walls and white beamed ceilings. The comfort of long, wide settees and a huge bed. I just smile thinking about it .

Hope it is not too long before your own boat is under construction.

I think a deck gun would add a lot to that look . . .

A nice two-pounder maybe . . .

LOL, Aussie here, not a Yank. Guns don't feature in our culture. Now when it comes to anchors though, ours will be nothing short of threatening .

Well, maybe not guns, but cannon?

Speaking of this.... Do you know to what K&M's polishing process is when they finish a hull? The Bestevaers we have seen in the wild are the only aluminum boats that retain a shine (haven't completely dulled) for years.

Final sanding for unpainted hulls is with P 80.

The only real "shine" I have seen is in areas such as handholds. The rail at the rear of the pilothouse on Bestevaer II (Dykstra's 10+ year old personal boat) had a high gloss .

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

A few years ago we encountered an alloy m/y whose exterior was done in "engine turning" patterns. Looked kinda like fish scales, and I really liked the appearance. Sorta like an old Bugatti engine block... but on a larger scale!

And it looks like the chaps at Bestaevar are really getting it on... fast progress so far! So different from what we've seen here in Oz at the one place where alloy yachts were being built.

Ovnis have a swirled sanding pattern on their hulls. I think it looks very good and it helps to disguise the patchy oxidation that occurs in time. A coating called Nylac can also be applied to retain a good finish (I am not sure if that has been used on any KM boats).

KM have their hands full at the moment, so although I have been itching for progress photos, I've tried to stay patient (not easy for someone without a patient bone in their body LOL).

They have just started a big project - a 78' exploration boat. Also their open day is this Saturday and all hands must have been "on deck" this past week or two getting the boats and yard and display stands ready:
Open Day / KM Yachtbuilders

If anyone is in the area, drop in. I would love more photos .
