The squares are simply a framework welded on the sheets of alu to strengthen the structure.

Will any aluminium show on the inside? Would be a shame to hide it all under wood or white panelling

The only alu showing in the interior living areas is in the head and shower, but this will be painted (similar to the shower in the Bestevaer Anabel, aka the "Helicopter boat").
Edited to add: a few interior alu items such as the laundry tubs, handholds in the shower and head and the bench in the workshop/technical area will be anodised.

White panelling will cover all other walls. Little alu would be seen here anyway, as above the waterline the hull in the living areas and also the bulkheads are lined with 75mm (3") of foam insulation.

Yeah thinking your going to want that insulation!

Shame the aluminium can't be incorporated in some way, personally I love the look of unfinished raw materials like wood steel glass and stone.

Actually I can't!!!!!

I'd be going crazy....

I'm duly impressed with your resolve in not insisting on some type of "vacation chalet" "oooooh and AWE earshot proximity" to KM...

edit- and squeal...

I added an edit about several alu items in the interior that you may have missed.

There will be a fair bit of SS in the rest of the living areas (some of the galley benchtops, Reflex heater and its heatshield, heaps of handholds). I think in a relatively small space mixing SS and alu would look a bit odd, so anodised alu has been confined to the head and shower and workshop.

Windows will all be glass. There are 9 in the pilothouse alone. Wood we will have in abundance (all cabinetry and under settees and the floors). I just love solid, unstained timber .

There will be PLENTY of raw alu to admire on the exterior .

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

I've come late to this party, and am slowly making my way thru it. Rather than wait though, I'll add my vote for having at least one electric winch. I'd call it a safety requirement--I'd want one if I was trying to lift an unresponsive MOB back on deck. Not to mention it sure makes lifting someone up the mast a lot easier.

To slightly hijack SWLs excellent thread, fine tolerance's story can be read here http://www.bruceroberts.com.au/northwest/051106.htm and furled sails has a podcast with them.

Phil is a member here with the tag fine tolerance. An epic voyage! Sounds like he pounded out the dents and she is as good as new.

Back to the wonderful sculpture of aluminum thats being created in Holland, whats your plan SWL for non skid? Are the decks going to be painted or left bare?

We went backward and forward with this. We will need at least one electric winch at some stage, but still manage our current boat very well without them (similar size). My hubbie's second specialty (no need to elaborate on the first ) is marine electrics, and given it is a reasonably easy conversion for not much more than the price difference would have been initially, we decided to make them manual for now.

We have oversized the winches to increase ease of use (Anderson 62 and 58 for the six in the cockpit, and 46 for the two at the mast).

We have gone for non skid paint. The paint pattern will be very simple (uncomplicated lines with gaps around the bulwarks, cabin top, fixtures etc) to make any touch ups easy in years to come. Colour will be pale to minimise the deck heating. The deck and cabin top are lined with 3" of insulation, so interior heating is further minimised. By the way, we have found painted alu to be dramatically cooler underfoot than teak.
