Best yacht clubs on Long Island (NY)

Any input on some of the best yacht clubs (read: most fun) on Long Island Sound (or between the forks) as a transient sailboat?

Looked at joining the NSYC in Port but decided to hold off a year for fear of embarrassing ourselves... We're 'nube's'

Yacht clubs? Wow. I've always thought I was out of place on CF but I guess this proves it.
Of course, as the old adage says, I wouldn't join a club that would have me for a member.

Check out the North Shore Yacht Club in Port Washington, NY; great club; very welcoming to cruising sailors. Port Washington is a great spot on the Island with direct rail service (LIRR) to the city...

Join a club as a newbie!! It's a GREAT way to glean a lot of wisdom from others!! We joined Northport over 20 years ago and then my husband was able to start crewing for a couple at the club and ended up doing J30 nationals with them. He has become quite a skilled sailor thanks to the skill and wisdom of others and their patience in teaching him!! Our club even has adult sailing classes for those who are new to sailing. Whatever club you choose, go, befriend people and volunteer to crew for races. You'll learn fast!

Interesting; I've always considered yacht clubs as one of the best places to learn how to sail... many have junior programs affiliated with US Sailing, a great resource for cruisers everywhere. Whether you're a joiner or not is a personal thing but I've learned a lot from every yacht and cruising club I've been associated with...
