Best way to sell a boat abroad?

Ahoy!!

I think the time has come for me to sell my beloved sailboat. But I don't want to sell it to anyone who lives in Seattle. What's the best way to get rid of a boat and also make sure that an Australian buys it? I think it'd be a pretty incredible farewell to sail it from Seattle to Australia.

Sail it Australia, anchor or park in a marina, spend a week or two locating a good broker, and go from there?

At least in Mexico I see US flagged boats for sale all the time. More so than Mexican flagged.

Re: Best way to sell a boat abroad?

We sold a First 405 in Oz back in 2008 and currently have our catamaran listed there now.

Test the waters.

Try a Google search for 'selling a boat in Australia' and you can easily find plenty of websites on which to list the boat. Like Yachts & Boats for Sale in Australia & New Zealand | Yachthub which costs around $30usd for 90 days. A few free sites as well and some that are considerably more. Good luck and fair winds.

Re: Best way to sell a boat abroad?

Yachthub is widely followed in OZ and New Zealand. Boatpoint is a more expensive site but much more popular!

David Bray yachts also does international listings. Speak to Rod and tell him James sent you, they are a good broker IMHO.

Having said that it might be a small buyer pool prepared to sail a 30 ft boat to Australia. Just saying.

Good Luck with it, I hope it goes well

I don't want to rain on your parade, but this is a boat with a spade rudder, she is over 30 yrs. old, and she has only 20 gallons water capacity. The passage from Mexico to the Marquesas is a long one. We use about 1/2 gallon per day fresh water where it's hot and you need to replenish bodily fluids. Honestly, though it's a lovely dream, I think it's unlikely she's going to Australia, and at a beam of 10 ft., she won't fit in a container. There are plenty of used boats in Australia, albeit not of Canadian manufacture.

I wish you luck with your project, because I know all too well how much you wish your boat a "happy" further existence.

Good luck.

Re: Best way to sell a boat abroad?

Just out of curiosity: why are you so set against selling your boat to someone who lives in Seattle? Does that extend to Portland, or to LA or to La Paz? I spend most of my time around Oz, but I'm in the states now... would you sell her to me?

What's really up here? Oh, I know that it isn't really any of my business, but it is an unusual constraint on a boat sale, one that adds considerable difficulty in making the sale.

Cheers,

Jim
