These look very nice, but I imagine one would need very deep pockets to afford them!

Less than a new Fantasy 44 (a beautiful boat), most of them .
The RM 1260 is the cheaper of the lot but they have a smaller and less expensive one. The previous model was and is sailed everywhere. You can sail it from the inside.
The smaller one the 1060.
You can see here two guys sailing the previous model (similar boat) from the interior with 30/34K wind.

Yes, you are right, some of the home finished boats are quite amaturish to say the least, however Joint Effort has been professionaly finished by a old world craftsman. his workmanship has been greatly admired by the Hinckley yacht company. After completing Joint Effort; (Zac Zatec) opened his company (European Custom Yachts) in Mass. He was very well regarded in the N.E. for his Yacht work. Zac has since passed on. Joint Effort has been owned by me for 19 years, everyone who has heard about her has asked to come aboard.

Re: Best Pilothouse Sailboat?
Nauticat has changed its fleet a lot. All three of the traditional motor sailors are designed to Category B. The 525 has taken the place of the 52 and is a Pilothouse yacht, not a motor sailor. It would take deep pockets...

Like I said earlier, I've been aboard a 525 (Upchuck) and wouldn't trade my 52 for it. Same hull, different deck, house, and interior. All they did to move from "Class B" was remove the sliding pilothouse door, which I think is one of the better features myself. I don't see it sinking the boat in a knockdown. The lower pilothouse roof destroyed the excellent all around visibility, particularly over the bow and astern. It also just feels much more cramped. Same in-mast furling rig and underbody. Performance should be quite similar, I dont think the changes they made reduced the windage all that much, especially with the boat heeled and sailing to weather, when it matters.

Re: Best Pilothouse Sailboat?
Sorry -- I am the one who added confusion between pilothouse and deck saloon. I really like sitting on a couch inside while on watch, or at anchor, which some deck saloons have. The separate helm inside isn't important enough for our use to be a deciding factor.
Also, I was thinking Boreal when I said Allures, for the cute little mini pilothouses. I think the Boreal 44 pilothouse design is such a good idea for small and medium sized sailboats -- that it's only slightly higher than many dodgers, and the way the forward facing settee makes the whole thing much smaller that you still have a normal cockpit and side decks. There's no separate helm inside, so it wouldn't fit the definition of a pilothouse here.

Re: Best Pilothouse Sailboat?
Today boats are driven in many ways. A wheel in the house in no longer required to be a pilot house.
My own and viciously biased definition is that on the pilothouse boat you can actually drive the boat from the pilothouse. RS and DS boats are a definitely different batch and many of them are actually very difficult to comfortably control from the RS/DS - unless one likes to stand very erect in an empty space without handholds and with halogen light beaming right into their eyes.
Not to say there are no boats that combine the functions in a very neat way.

I like the Sceptre 41 or 43 myself. They have a variety of interiors. Here is a link:

You're gonna have to settle for the second best pilothouse sailboat because I already have the best one. Vagabond 39 hull #1 Landfall.

Baba's, Panda's and Tashiba's were available as PH's.

Lovely boats, like all Bob Perry designs. . Lots of exterior teak to care for though...
