Being from Finland I must comment
the labor costs in Finland are high, I believe well higher than European Union average. This and the EU-requirements mean one can't manufacture some cheap crap, but you must see that the quality is good. Or at least good enough. Another well known boat made in Finland is Swan. Unfortunately the ownership was sold to Italy but they are still made in Finland. Of course there are various manufacturers, but I bet it would be impossible to manufacture a bad quality in Finland and keep the business running, just too expensive and too much regulation.

About Nauticats, the earlier models were all motorsailors, and I believe the 43 was the first model that Siltala Yachts introduced that had better performance under sail than the previous models. This was about 20-25 years ago.

BTW, looks like Siltala Yachsts have changed the name to Nauticat Yachts

The pilothouse on my boat is steel, just like the rest of her. I've often thought it would be better to have the hull steel but pilothouse constructed of timber/grp/other and my reasons are threefold: the alternative material choice first, offers better insulation; second, would reduce interference with the compass; and third would not interfere with satellite communications. With regard to the latter and at the risk of sounding precious, currently I use a small handheld GPS to confirm and chart my location against the fancy plotter - it can be a deterrent to have to go outside the pilothouse in bad weather to hold up my handheld.

Aluminum is sometimes used on large ships to save weight in the superstructure.

A look at classic boats like the original Cal cruising 46 destined by Bil Lapworth
Or the pan oceanic 46 by Ted brewer shows true pilothouse solid Water boats">blue water boats
With solid thick heavy fiberglass hulls, all weather off shore boats

These boats are still circling the globe and have withstood the test of time

I have owned my Corbin for 19 years and still have a hard time considering when to sell her. she is fast, roomy, and pleasing to look at. not to mention a great live aboard boat.

I am currently looking at a (Moody) Carbineer 46 built in Melb in 1980. Search on The "Ketchup" for a review - Laurent Giles design - cutter rig ketch. Solid glass hulls and deck, 20 tonnes, raised saloon with good visibility down over the water, twin helm (inside and out) - built like the proverbial brick ......... Most of the Carbineers from that yard have circumnavigated at least once and still going strong after 30 years. Much better looking than the Carbineers that came out of England. Cost to build in 1980 was over A$1m and estimated cost to build now has been estimated at double that.

The Pittwater built Buizens are solid, beautiful designed vessels as well. The new 52 is well worth a look, if a little pricey.

Not owing a penny is a not inconsiderable asset in a boat description.
