Re: Best alarm

That is a close call. I'm glad no one was injured.

Re: Best alarm

Like Ddabs said they are all good. Depends on your wallet & preference. I use Raymarine myself they have a good reputation . You can buy a package through Defender or West with potter Ray dome etc all together for a reduced price. I paid 3k for the E7 as pictured above with the dome & all connections cables etc.
If you are reasonably handy you can fit it yourself. I did all my cables & fittings but fortunately I had an expert nearby to plug it all together ( thanks Nathan from Tang).

Re: Best alarm

A used radar and display/plotter can be had for less than a grand.

Modern radars are not ALL very good. I just finished a delivery in Maine where a lobster boat appeared out of the fog at 50 yards that was essentially invisible on Garmin GMR 18 HD radar. I have a lot of experience with older Furuno radars, and if it was my boat the Garmin would be taking a swim about now.

Re: Best alarm

There was a guy who was accidentally rammed and sunk by a partially submerged visiting Chilean sub in Juan de Fuca a few years back. I can't recall the details except he was reassured by the sub itself and he lost everything. He was also never compensated. At least that's what my memory says.

Re: Best alarm

There are some areas where submarines exercising areas are labeled on the charts. Are the San Juan de Fuca Straits thus posted? Pretty hard to see a submerged sub, in any event, and perhaps the modern coatings on one would defeat our simple radars, anyhow.

Re: Best alarm

Nanoose bay on eastern Vancouver island is a submarine testing area and there is a large section of water around there that is marked as restricted however the guy rammed by the Chilean sub was nowhere near there
