Best 35-40 footer for a couple going anywhere.
I want a capable, safe, well built boat under 200k that can be sailed by a couple or in a pinch single handed. I don’t care if it is still in production. I care less about speed or maneuverability and more about safety and stability. Comfort over style. Prefer reliability and low maintenance costs to exclusivity or teak decks. Tough as nails. Proven design. Storage for a few people on a long journey over space for many people on a quick excursion. Here are some thoughts I had. Let me know what you think:
Ingrid 38
Valiant 40
Hallberg-Rassy 39
Westsail 42
Pacific Seacraft 40
Island Packet 37
Passport 40
S&S 34
Contessa 32
Rustler 36
Baba 40
Cambria 40
Najad 390
Compare and contrast. Let me know what you think of manufacturers. Any and all information is welcome.
Thanks,
Jon

Re: Best 35-40 footer for a couple going anywhere.
There's a great offshore boat list at the bottom of this page: Mahina Expedition - Selecting A Boat for Offshore Cruising
The Contessa 32 seems kind of the odd duck out on your list..while seaworthy as hell, it is a narrow 32ft. You list the Baba 40, but the Baba 30 or 35 (or a handful of other smaller boats) would seem the fit your criteria better than the Contessa. A little beam can go a long way in terms of creature comfort.
Here's a great list of smaller bluewater boats.. Atom Voyages - Good Old Boats List

Best 35-40 footer for a couple going anywhere.
There was literally an identical thread to this started a week ago. 35-40 ft. Same exact thing.
Have you been on any one of those boats?

This is like asking what color you like.

Re: Best 35-40 footer for a couple going anywhere.
I am wondering if you have done a search on here at all. If you put each of the boats one by one into the search I think that you will find something about each one.
It is a bit hopeful to expect folks to give you opinions on that many boats and. for you to believe these opinions if they did, without doing research of your own, is fraught with it's own dangers.
It is a way too broad width of information that you are expecting I think, but, you just never know.
Coops.

Re: Best 35-40 footer for a couple going anywhere.
Letsgetsailing3,
I'm asking for opinions sure, but this is nothing like asking what you're favorite color is. I've given financial, size, functional, etc. parameters. Then of course there is the why. I'm seeking the why, not just another list of boats.
Coops,
Obviously I have google, amazon and the library available to me and I am utilizing them. I've come to this forum for individual opinions, for owners to chime in and for people in the industry to give me additional information. If you don't want to make the effort because you believe that I haven't done sufficient research, that's fine, but there's no harm in asking.

I love HR's but doubt you will find a 39 for less than $200K. We sat down and made a list of what we want on a boat, we came up with the following:
Keel stepped-mast
No in-mast furling
Deep keel (over 6')
Separate shower stall
Dedicated nav station
High build quality
Reputation for taking care of the crew
Able to sail into the wind
Lead keel with an AVS over 130
We crossed off Island packets because we did not want the sluggish qualities of the full keel. The high placement of the cement ballast does not instill confidence. If we were choosing a boat just for coastal stuff and/or livea-board then IP would be our 1st choice.
After reading Nigel Calders Cruising Handbook and looking at a 37 and 40, we put PSC 40/44's at the top of our list. Have not sailed one yet but that is the next step. The price for these (40/44) starts at $229K so they are over your budget.

Re: Best 35-40 footer for a couple going anywhere.
The Passports were mostly built by Ta Shing prior to about 90. thats a real good thing.... I think the Baba's were also. Alot less wood on a Passport than a Baba. Another great built, little known boat is the Tollycraft 39. Built by a legendary company that didnt compromise quality. garden designed double ender.
