Beneteau Oceanis 331 Vs 311

Hello Everyone

So i am buying a new boat, and i have narrowed it down to two choices. The Beneteau Oceanis 331 and 311, they are the right size and have the right equipment.

However before i go ahead and buy one or the other i would like to hear if any of you guys has had some experience with them bad or good.

Another thing i am interested in knowing is speed. I know you cant really say it will go this fast because there are so many things that factor in, but i am curious to hear what top speeds you have achieved, and what you would call normal cruising speed.

Last but not least i am curious about the lift-keel with twin rudders, is it as stable as the fin-keel?

Thank you for all the help.

Have owned the standard 331.. nice boat.. speed..?? Lets put it this way... SMX to Faial, Azores solo 23 days.. good enough for me.. full reefed main and Genoa adjusted to suit conditions.. don't assume distance as the crow flies.. the Stream and winds push one W for the 1st 1/3rd of the trip so you actually end up travelling an arc and approach the Azores from WSW

Delivered a lift keel/twin 331 from UK to the Algarve.. lovely downwind flyer with keel up... however she had a bow thruster fitted for marina work as the rudders have very little grip for safe manouvering in gusty conditions at low speeds

The 311.. can't help with that one..

Re: Beneteau Oceanis 331 Vs 311

I ordered a 311 but when my wife had a chance to compare it to the 331 at the boat show it resulted in an order change to the 331. The 331 is much more substantial and roomier. I believe the 331 is better suited if you plan to do more than day sailing.
The 331 is a solid boat that sails well. Top speed is in the 7 to 7.5 knot range.
The aft cabin is subject to the hull slap issue that is common on these types of wide stern designs so for a good nights sleep the V berth works best. There is a product called the "slap silencer" that can be used to deal with the aft cabin sound issue but we only had the boat for a couple years before we moved over to a catamaran so I can't tell you if it works.

Where there other points that changed your mind besides that it was roomier inside? Also does your 331 have the fin keel or the Lift Keel?

The accommodations were the big selling point of the 331 - the 311 aft cabin had limited headroom and the galley was much smaller.

We had the shoal draft fin keel. The shoal draft keel is lead while the regular draft keels are cast iron.

Re: Beneteau Oceanis 331 Vs 311

I like my 311 shoal draft but it is a bit tender. I have the impression that the 331 is less so.
311 shoal draft is iron keel.
