Beneteau 48 ocean crossing capability
Hi All!!
Just after some advice regrading a Beneteau 48 crossing the Atlantic and going around the cape, I hear every no and again people saying they would struggle, but then i hear people say they are fine, just not comfortable in rough weather.
Just after some advice before i make a purchase. The boat will be fully fitted with all equipment required for ocean cruising.
Thanks

Re: Beneteau 48 ocean crossing capability
Here comes another twenty pages of gibberish.
Short answer: it's fine until really bad weather tears it apart. The Atlantic has been crossed in a 12' inflatable, and the Atlantic has destroyed 800' vessels. It all depends on the weather you get into.

Best off buying an older Oyster than a Beneteau 48 thats relatively new.

Re: Beneteau 48 ocean crossing capability
Hiya, i have been looking at Oysters, but they would be around the year 2000. and somebody did say that the equipment would all need updating, so i would end up spendin a hell of a lot more money than i can afford.
I do love the oysters.

Well, I have done over 40,000 nms in my 39 ft Beneteau. So I guess your bigger one would sink.

Re: Beneteau 48 ocean crossing capability
Having seen a number of various failures on a number of designs, I would opt for something like a Rustler, HR, Contest, etc. Stuff built for cooler waters and rougher seas.
In some ocean areas bashing gets quite intense. And it is a big financial effort and risk to pluck sailors out of boats in rough extra tropical waters.
I know a guy who rounded the Horn in a rib. Anything does. But not everybody does.
Cheers,
b.

Re: Beneteau 48 ocean crossing capability
Sailed mine from AC NJ to Marathon in FL key, out around Hatteras. Got hit by 3 nasty storms, 60mph winds n 16-20' seas, lightning everywhere. Boat handled it all fine. A little terrifying for the crew but I'd take the boat anywhere

Re: Beneteau 48 ocean crossing capability
I have over 20,000 NM on my 2008 beneteau 46, couple of fairly rough Ocean crossings (50 knot winds for a little while). I think the boat handles things very well. The boat is a great platform for sailing and longer term cruising. It was a good deal drier and more comfortable than my J42 was in similar conditions. I would not be worried about it as long as I had prepared the boat and crew properly (good sails, good maintenance, good safety and communication Equipment, and good sailors). In my view, the preparation issues go with every boat.

Re: Beneteau 48 ocean crossing capability
My Bene 51.4 Cyclades has crossed the Atlantic with Factory Crew (found their notes in the desk drawer with the Azores Spanish CG communications). She was purchased off Moorings in BVI in 2012. Have been on almost every rock in the Carib down to Grenada across the Bonaire and Curacao, and now in St Croix with frequent visits to the USVI, BVI and SVI. Been in frequent Squals out here and bad blows between the windwrds one I recall Martinique to Dominica was the worst maybe 50+. Also coming up 4 days and nights from Bonaire to St Croix the first 100nm were 35-40 sustained on the STB bow lot of bashing but good sailing.
I'd go anywhere with the Mary Jane. She can take it.
Question that someone else already ask can you take it.

About any sound boat will take a lot more than its crew.

I was not entering the discussion, I simply sent the Original Poster information on a boat I thought he may be interested in.

Most important. Make sure you have a sugar scoop stern and swim ladder. Most used feature.
