Beneteau 411 lists to starboard.. Oh oh ?

Hello all,

I'm about to inspect an oceanis 411 from 2001, but now a close friend who lives nearby the marina told me the boat i'm interested in seems to heel over to the starboard side while tied up in the marina...

With osmosis as worst case cause in my mind, I hope there might be a less severe cause.. Anyone an idea / experiences with this ?

I hope it's an extra diesel or water tank but still.. A 41 footer needs quite some weight to make it heel over i suppose ?? Pretty heavy keel...

Hope you guys have an idea (I'll ask the owner when i actually get to see the boat myself soon)

Brgds

Almost certainly it's just a matter of weight distribution inside. This isn't anything that should scare you away from the boat before you take a look.

If the keel's bent/osmosis is happening or something like that, the haulout/survey before purchase (you are going to haul/survey, right?) will be easily discovered at that time.

Happy shopping.

Don't worry about it at all. For example, our boat, larger than the one you're considering trims with a slight heel to port when that water tank's full, and to starboard, when the port tank's empty. Monos are meant to heel easily.

TJ's subtle suggestion to have a survey done before purchase is right on. He's not, afaik, a member of a surveyors' union. ;-)

I have a Beneteau 393 v similar to a 411. I think the early years of them may have had a slight list depending on the battery bank size and if the forward water tank, port, is full and the aft tank, starboard empty, but a big battery bank port.

Or the goose may have tied it up too tight.

I have heard of Island Packets having this problem due to having too many batteries on one side. Some new owners did not opt for the "upgraded battery bank" option.

My Amel 51 heels to starboard. All tools and parts tend to store on starboard side.

It's simple. Some beneteaus are bent-in-two to port, and some are bent-in two to port.

Weight distr location issue.. for sure, Osmosis don't do that unless the hull is holding several gallons of seawater in the laminate , very very unlikely.!!!!

Check the holding tank. If we let ours get full (Beneteau 381) it induces a list to Starboard.

But a listing boat is almost always a gear storage problem or tank issue. I can't even remember seeing a boat that listed because of hull deformation or build issues.

Re: Beneteau 411 lists to starboard.. Oh oh ?

Monohulls - think lots of ballast at the bottom of a deep keel, then a tall mast, and not much beam. Given the narrow beam and usually rounded bottom, the center of buoyancy doesn't move very much over the first few degrees of list, so there's not much added righting moment. But, get that ballast much off the center line, and she's got a whopping moment arm. Ergo, minor changes in weight distribution will cause a few degrees of list, while she'll still right very well when knocked down. We have a broader beam and a hard chine that adds righting moment though added buoyancy on the low side in a hurry, but still get up in the morning, look at the inclinometer, and decide which tank to use and whether to pump out that day.

Re: Beneteau 411 lists to starboard.. Oh oh ?

Blisters/osmosis cannot possibly cause a boat to list but a leak sure can. The problem almost has to be weight distribution but check for a dry bilge as well. Most likely cause will be something heavy such as stored chain. Remember on a boat that size it generally takes well over 100 lbs to create a list. You can estimate how much weight needs to be shifted by using several friends as counterweights while you view from the dock to determine when balanced.

Most of the Beneteaus list one way or another. Usually on the side where the galley is. 393 port, 423 starboard, 473 down by the stern. Just stow your beverage of choice on the opposite side.

I list a bit to port myself these days, but my wife has kept me around for some reason.
