American's desire/lust to have the biggest, newest, latest greatest boat, gadget gizmo and/or technology can be traced back to advertisers taking advantage of their inherent gullibility and insecurity.
That said the KISS (keep it simple stupid) principle is a paradox, there is a certain degree of intellectual effort to devise, build and use a KISS based system. The whole idea behind technology is to remove the necessity of thought to accomplish a task (and when it breaks down the complexity is such that a specially trained technician with spacial tools and parts
is necessary for repair). The other day someone said to me "keep it simple dude".
My feelings on the matter are as follows...if the failure of any system or component puts the boat or crew at risk its existance on the boat should be looked at very closely.
