The 2 years:
  1. engines (3)
  2. plumbing and deck leaks
  3. head
Thereafter:

Nothing, really. I've either gone numb or figured out. But I still swear at certain things occasionally, just for the practice.

In 5 years...

- engine
- head (2x repaired)
- lazarette water leaks (grrr...)

To be fair my personal experience and the observation of others experience the engine problems boil down to preventative maintenance and money. Most folks with engine trouble, including me, are a result of 30 year old diesels and minimal maintenance. A first class overhaul including the accessories, electrical, cooling and exhaust results in many more years of trouble free operation. Continually patching engine systems back together one failure at a time is very frustrating.

I agree Ex-Calif but you just repair each fault as, or better than new and you get there in the end. One of the things I like about the Perkins 4236 is that it is an industrial base engine with wet liners and you can rebuild it quite easily as they were fitted to many vehicles,JCB's,Massey-Ferguson tractors etc many local engineers are familiar with them. They also have great torque for an 80 hp engine.

My biggest concern is other boaters...
1. People who anchor too close then drag back on you.
2. People who don't know when to stand on or give way.
2. People on jetskis

Absolutely. Taking a systems approach yields a rolling refit. When the head went bad I replaced everything in the system. Trouble free for 5 years. I was occasionally breaking running rigging. Replaced all genny cars, traveller, rebuilt winches. All good now.

I am at the point the boat requires pm only and can now focus, I hope, on the interior rebuild.

A fella i know has 2 small silhouettes (think fighter pilot kills) of jetskiers on the pilothouse of his 50ft steel ketch, one ran into him at anchor and the other while underway, he now thinks they would make great Skeet practice......

How about a UN resolution saying that if Jet skis come within shotgun range of you at anchor it's ok to have a go at them? Birdshot only, of course...

Cheers,

Jim

The previous owner left the masking tape on too long after anti fouling, it is near impossible to get off!
