Yea and he did most of his cruising in the 50's and 60's. Doesn't matter to me, physics dont change with time. Explain to me how a transom sterned boat is more advanced or faster than a double ender? Bob's take that transom sterns in non-wood boats are a money saving device is spot on to me. And I've spent years building boats and working with designers. I never said double-enders are best, in fact my boat has a transom. I just said that a boat doesn't have to be slow because it has a pointy stern. And that the pointy stern does have some advantages. Look at all the "modern" designs that are really throwbacks to the old days of sharpies and the like. Believe me, yacht design has not come as far as the average NA would like you to believe in the last hundred years. Only the materials and construction methods have changed, which obviously allows you to change design some, but the elemental problems are still the same. Please argue with me the logic that if a double-ended shape is more efficient below the waterline, due to less drag, then it is also more efficent above the waterline when exposed to immersion by extreme conditions. Ever seen a sailboat with a transom that extends below the waterline? Of course not, that would be stupid as it would create drag. All Bob is saying is that some transom sterned boats, when heeled substantially, put the transom in the water and create a lot of drag. The canoe stern solves that, while providing reserve buoyancy in the stern. Why is that a bad thing? Other than the added expense for the builder of making a canoe stern of course.

FWIW: Beauty being (only) in the eye of the beholder; I’m not enamoured of double-enders.
I find them; neither aesthetically attractive, nor functionally admirable.
It's also very important to note that, I generally prefer the colours orange & yellow, to green & brown.

Oh, you meant the boat? In that case, VALIS isn't a true double-ender, but more of a canoe stern. It has all the drawbacks previously mentioned, but I sure like the look. There is plenty of buoyancy for following seas, and as long as I have the sails properly trimmed she stays balanced at all points of sail.

For me trimarans are by far the sexist boats on the water. Double-enders are just too old school.

Do you think women would flock to this first or a double-ender?

Actually, the conventional wisdom is that double-enders do better in following seas. One thing for sure, they don't get "spanked" (and tossed around) the way the broad, sugar-scoop transoms do. I have this on first-hand experience having sailed a fair amount on both double-enders and the others. But, it's another one of those things that can be easily seen at the dock. Next time a wake rolls through your marina, just listen. All those sugar scoop transoms will slap, slap, slap and the canoe sterns and double-enders won't make a sound. It's a minor annoyance, to be sure, and isn't in and of itself enough to favor one design over another. But there you have it.
