Are Cats that Great?

Me and my girlfriend sailed accross the south pacific in a 30ft cat. I hadn't mind a bigger one but that was all we could afford at that time. 6 months after the crossing I went down to Belgium to help a guy with a 63 ft Ketch (shipped in from NZ). One thing is for sure. I will never get a monohull as a long distance boat. If you like to heel all the time = buy a mono. If you want it comfortable = buy a cat. That is the main decision for me, to have a comfortable lifestyle onboard.

Everyone here I hope recognizes I have no allegiance to monos and my plan is to buy a cat.

However I must surmise that dollar for dollar you can get a faster mono than a cat.

That is with $150,000 bucks to spend you can get a faster mono than a cat.

My concern is that we always compare 42 foot monos with 42 foot cats and with dollars being the lubricant it just isn't a paritive comparison IMO.

If hull speed for mono's is 1.34 x the sq rt of the WL

and

If hull speed for cats's is 1.72 x the sq rt of the WL

Where does the price curve intersect?

I will sit on my 43 foot cat...flat all day long....with my drinks and food on the table.......and sail through fairly rough seas without having to hold onto anything......I have owned both.....But love my cat....passages are soooooo much more relaxing and fast. Again my personal preference...but i'll not be going to one hull again.

It was asserted that for a given amount you could always buy a faster monohull than a cat. I don't think so. In fact I'd say the opposite is true. If you set out to find the fastest available mono or cat at any given budget, I'd say the cat will always be the faster boat.

Certainly you could also buy a cat that is slower, if you set out to look for one as you have, but that's not the point.

62 foot Gunboat for $2,290,000 USD

or


72 ft Reichel Pugh for $4,408,864 USD

Which one is more comfortable and faster, bearing in mind the gunboat video floating around of this boat flogging an 80 ft Reichel Pugh, which I assume would be more expensive and possibly faster than a 72 fter.

I'll have 2 gunboats instead thanks, or $2.2 mill in the bank earning me $175,000 a year for doing nothing.
