The argument comparing v-berths vs. level king sized beds is amusing. You're both wrong. Give me an autopilot, full sail, a moderate breeze in the late afternoon, and ---
the trampoline!

Jerk? Boasting? I did neither but.....did someone say beer?

Come on Down to Margaritaville... Do it today and you'll catch both myself and Richard Woods and have your pick of Cats to test drive. (Richard, don't pull up the hook yet... looks like there might be some visitors)

There are options better than them but they have their place still maintained. But this thing depends on personal needs and choice.

Although I have been accused of being anti-catamaran, that's simply not true. I have sailed on both cruising monos and cruising multis.

I think there are some things we can say objectively:

a) an overloaded cat is a pig and depending on the cat, it's relatively easy to overload it.

b) the motion, while steadier than a mono, is quite different. The lack of feedback at the helm is something a monohuller will need to get used to.

c) on long passages, when the boat is loaded for cruising and not being pushed to the limit (in other words, in "normal" mode), the speed advantages of a catamaran over a monohull narrow considerably and possible disappear altogether.

d) there is no hard evidence to suggest that, overall, cats are better or worse in heavy weather.

so, in my opinion that leaves two main advantages:

space and initial stability (i hesitate to say "motion comfort" because some people don't consider the motion of a cat particularly comfortable. Others, of course, feel the same way about monos).

and two main disadvantages:

initial cost (about 2x as much or more) and the additional cost of berthing a "double wide"

I have heard it said many times "You either like Cats or Dogs". That being said I have always considered myself a "Dog" person, but on the water I prefer "Cats".

I think I'm confusing myself

They certainly each have advantages, but the arguments for capacity and speed certainly take on different light as the Cat gets bigger. I will probably never be able to afford something like a St Francis 50, but I don't think capacity is a problem and I really doubt a mono would ever begin to compare as far as speed, even when fully loaded in "normal" cruising mode.

You are really trying to compare apples to oranges and the term 'Better" is really relative.

As for the V-berth vs. the King vs. the tramp........... with the right person they all sound wonderful to me!

A flat sailing boat is apt to widen the scope of the search for 'the right person'. Forum ladies excepted, most women just don't enjoy a cave heeled over at 25 degrees.

As for the price issue. I fully agree that this is a clear and present obstacle to cruising catamaran ownership for most of us. My choice was to locate an older, smaller cat with a pedigree (pun intended). The other choice is to build one yourself and save 2/3's of it's cost.

There are ways around every obstacle if you take the time to research the issue.

Take a look at this year's Caribbean 1500 finishes - Cruising Class. The two cats did Ok, but were beat out by several monos of similar waterline, including a Valiant 40. Although they weren't racing, they all left Hampton, VA. the same day and sailed under similar conditions (on pretty much the best point of sail for catamarans, btw).

I can see where you might assume this boat has capsized, but that is not the case. On this particular day they were racing, the wind died and they flipped the boat so they could all get in the water and push. It worked pretty well and you can see that the guy in the back is actually having a hard time keeping up. Just thought I'd shed a little light.

Trampoline Trampoline!!!

OHHHH! Trampoline
Ahhh, Trampoline

There are no cigarette smiles!

I'll admit it. I was going to sell my cat and buy a mono. But this thread has given such an appreciation for the joys!
