Anyone recognise design/origin of this?

Thinking about buying this (dirt cheap). 25' All steel. Anyone recognise the design or build? It reminds me of something but I can't put my finger on it.
West coast of Oz if that's any help. Name (Bengali Dancer) suggests maybe India. Anyone?

Geoff,
If you buy something like that, you will in all probability be throwing your money away. As you have found out in the past, a low starting price for a yacht does not necessarily mean a good deal.
Have you thought about just hiring a boat when you want to go for a sail?

Regards,
Richard.

There is probably a reason it is dirt cheap aside form the current condition. A 25 foot steel boat would be awfully heavy. If you want something in that size range stick to FRP or wood if you happen to be a Masochist.

Further to my earlier post, have you thought about buying a trailer boat? You can get a Hartley TS 16 for around $3000 and have a heap of fun with much less ongoing expense. A TS 16 was one of the most fun boats I have ever owned.

Regards,
Richard.

Spoken like a city dweller. Small country town, there is no such thing as boats (of any kind) for hire.

They're asking 1500, I've offered 500. Probably cost that to ship it here. At that price I could sell the fittings, sell the hull to a scrapyard and come out in front. Still think it's a bad deal?

Have considered that, however the Chief Officer is allergic to small boats. We went out on a mate's 22' Duncanson in windy but not rough conditions. She nearly didn't get on a boat again. Besides, want something with a bit of room and some comforts (meaning marine toilet - she won't do the bucket thing).

I don't like anything that small either to be honest, too damn easy to tip over, not a fan of centreboard boats at the best of times.

I just missed out on a 30 footer for 3k. Drove down to take a look (400 plus k each way) only to find he'd sold it (despite arranging to go take a look at it - he didn't mention someone else had been to look.) Wasn't happy.

It had been on the market most of a year and he'd dropped the price.

If you can get a 20 footish TS anything here for under 5k it's close to a miracle, this ain't Sydney. My budget is 3k and that's pushing it. This boat is 1500 and I've offered 500.

All boats are money pits. Only the depth varies.

Mm, around 200-300 a tonne depending on where you take it. I have a mate that does regular trips to Adelaide with scrap steel so he knows the best places and best prices, how to prep it etc. This would have to be a tonne or so of hull at least, probably more like two, probably 300kg in the keel alone. So that would cover the purchase price.

The fittings should be good for a few hundred at least (alloy mast and boom, some sails, winches, whatever else is there.) That would go close to cover shipping. (Backloads from Perth for something that size around 500 or so, most freight is from east to west so not hard to arrange...)

I emailed the seller, to check it was still available, he answered yes, so I replied asking for more details and pics suggesting I'd offer around 500 based on what I could see of it. No response, so perhaps he's dreaming or it's a lot better inside than it looks outside...

Re: Anyone recognise design/origin of this?

Gentlemen, firstly, thanks for your comments and advice and I do take on board what you are saying. Perhaps boat ownership is a form of subtle madness. But I have learned from previous experience, not least of which is to jump at the bait for whatever they ask. Whatever I buy now, I'll be pushing the price down to what it's actually worth and not what someone thinks it owes them. If they don't want to deal at that, then I'm not going to feather their nest. I have a lot of time and not a great deal of money, so I'm happy to work on things that need work to get them ready to go if I can save significant money on it. I lost a lot of money on a bad deal and can't get it back. So now I have to sniff around the bottom of the market, so I'm not going to pay top dollar for anything ever again.

You would be better off with something like this, trailer included too.

Geoff I figure it's time for you to decide if you want a boat to work on (for an extended time) or a boat to sail on and enjoy (with minimal work).
The latter is always dearer in the short term but inevitably cheaper in the long term.
Just my 2 cents worth!

Geoff, I'm not being critical, but I want to be direct with you as I think it needs. If anyone on the forum thinks I am wrong they will certainly pipe up (quickly!)

It will cost a huge amount to ship it or truck it, even if you own the truck and drive it yourself. The boat is a wreck. Not worth the price of a Coober Pedy harlott.

By the way, I doubt it was designed by a professional. It looks like a backyard build.

That peter Cole designed boat someone linked to would be a far better choice. If it was built by East Coast yachts in Gosford it will be a cracker.
