Anyone near Long Beach Island, NJ, USA that can help?

Can anyone near Long Beach Island, NJ, USA that can help me with a birthday gift to my wife's Aunt? We will be on vacation Sept 15-21, 2013 and I would like to give her a birthday gift of another sailboat ride for her. She sailed for years with her now late husband but has not been on a boat in years. Even though she will be 90 this year, her health is still great. There will be 3-6 people in our party.

Or does anyone know of someone in the area that could help.

Re: Anyone near Long Beach Island, NJ, USA that can help?

Are there any good sailing Marinas near Long Beach Island, NJ, USA?

How would one go about renting a sailboat and captain for a couple of hours????

Any advise???

Re: Anyone near Long Beach Island, NJ, USA that can help?

I think one problem with LBI is that the bay areas (north, south and west of the island) are all too shallow for most sailboats, even catamarans. I was up there in late July and tried to look for a few places to charter a boat with no luck.

Do post if you find something though. Your best bet might be a regular "motor" yacht charter though.

Here's just one of many.

Barnegat Bay Sailing School and Sailboat Charters | Learn to Sail with Confidence

part of the upper Barnegat averages 8-10 feet deep and has tons of sailing/sailboats...

Try searching Toms and Forked River info/ Chamber of Commerce or yacht clubs..I'm sure there's plenty online..it's just how bad did Hurricane Sandy hurt them.

Re: Anyone near Long Beach Island, NJ, USA that can help?

If her physical condition permits her boarding a boat from the dock (within her comfort zone), and she wants to do it, then charter a yacht for the day. Honestly, even though you sound like you want to surprise her, your project could go awry, in any number of ways. Here are only two possible problems that occurred to me: one, if she loved sailing with her husband, will going sailing make her miss him all the more? two, after a 5 year hiatus, will her body allow her to get on a boat (is she limber enough? is her balance still good?) It's a lovely idea you've had, but I really think you will be kinder to her if you check it out with her first, even though you have to give up the "surprise" part of it.

My 2 cents.

Ann

PS. For your frame of reference, I am 73 yrs. old, in good health, yet aware of physiological changes which have limited what I can and cannot do.

Re: Anyone near Long Beach Island, NJ, USA that can help?

Thanks, Psneeld and Ann T. for replying!!!!!

Rsneeld; I'll check it out. I did not know that LBI is that shallow.

Ann T.; That is some good points; I will ask her first, as far as ballance she is the youngest at heart as just about anyone 20 years younger, but we will be there to assist her if she still chooses to go.

Thanks again for all the help.....!!!!!!!

This is the best form out there.....I have learn so much so far.

I've had experience with Barnegat Bay Sailing & Charters, they do a great job.

Re: Anyone near Long Beach Island, NJ, USA that can help?

There is also Nelson Sailing Center in Island Heights on Toms River that has a variety of boats available for rent and can provide a captained boat as well. Really nothing marina wise on LBI with sizeable sailboats except High Bar Harbor and that is probably not going to be a place to find a chartered boat.

Thanks for replying Crimea Cruiser;

I will check it out, but first I want to ask her if she wants to go sailing again, before I disappoint her.

Thanks again!!!

unfortunately Nelson's doesn't appear to be operating the Sailing Center or the Rental/Charter business, they took a pretty hard hit from Sandy. The marina is running, maybe you should give them a call.
