Any Pearson 30 Owners Out There ?

I am making my first boat purchase and have been looking at a couple 1980's Pearsons. I am planning on doing some water sailing">blue water sailing, so i need a very ocean worthy boat. Are Pearsons fairly reliable? I understand there are inherent risks, but i want to be as safe as possible because i will be sailing with my daughter.

There were more than a 1000 Pearson 30s built between 1971 & 1981. I’ve read that over 400 of them were built in 1973/74, alone.

Check for GATE Valves @ thru-hulls.

Check for damage at the chain plate penetrations (wet core), and the externally flanged & SCREWED hull-deck joint.

I believe that they may also have had Rudder problems (aluminum shaft & sloppy bushings).

The Pearson 30 is a wonderful coastal cruiser, but most are not ready for real blue water sailing without some beefing up, primarily in terms of stronger standing rigging, bigger, self-tailing winches and of course new or at least newer sails. Personally, I would install a strong below decks autopilot and a wind vane. A lot of the boats have added wheel steering but I prefer the original tiller. I think the hull itself is ready to go offshore. One great feature is that the ballast is contained in a fiberglass laid-up keel, instead of a bolt-on keel. which is very unusual for such an inexpensive boat.

Most are equipped with an Atomic 4 gas inboard. A diesel is much better, and basically a requirement IMO.

If you can find one that's been well maintained, with a solid hull, a diesel inboard and a deck with no problems, go for it. You can enjoy it very much as a coastal cruiser while you get ready to go offshore.

If you are not too far from the Northeast, pm me and I will tell you about one that I own and will be selling soon.

Re: Any Pearson 30 Owners Out There ?

How did I not see this thread before?

I own a 1974 Pearson 30. I sail out of Kingston, on Lake Ontario, thousand islands region.

My P30 has an 18hp 1985 volvo penta 2002, new sails, new standing rigging (very strong), chart plotter, dinghy, furling jib, Autohelm ST2000+, and of course a flat panel TV. For more info, click http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/...da-150816.html

The P30 was built with a poor seal around the rudder post. Check for delam and soft decks in the aft part of the cockpit floor. Its not expensive or difficult to repair, just a chore.

Check the bottom of the compression post for rot.

The cockpit drains were built with no seacock (shutoff). Although they were built "hull thick", its still not good. Many have, at some point, been cut and had seacocks installed with proper shutoffs.

On my boat, both the headwaste tank (and all hoses) and the freshwater tank were replaced. Likely for good reason.

The original atomic 4, while a decent, reliable engine, is not suitable for offshore. You need the range, safety, and reliability of a diesel. Nothing wrong with an atomic 4 equipped P30, but a diesel is much prefered, especially if you are going offshore.

The original sails are too old to be serviceable. Be sure you have new or newer sails.

The P30 sails wonderfully. For a 30' boat it handles great, and can take a big wind and a big sea. But its still just 30'. I was out today in 15 knots winds with a full jib (no main today) and had a great time. Over 5 knots most of the time. Lee rail down, but no water on deck or over the bow.

If you have any specific questions, I'd be happy to try to answer as best I can. And I've got pictures: http://1drv.ms/1CrbSlc

If you are thinking of cruising around the Caribbean, I think its a good boat for that. However, IMHO, not suitable for long passages or ocean crossings.

Pearson 30s are great boats though it wouldn't be my first choice for "bluewater," but I am more curious about your choice. This will be your first boat and you want to take your daughter across an ocean? How did you settle on the Pearson 30? If you tell us more about your sailing goals and current level of sailing experience we could all probably give you some helpful pointers.

Re: Any Pearson 30 Owners Out There ?

Hello,

I haven't picked up my P-30 yet, but I have done a fair amount of research
on this boat. Generally, from what I have read, the P-30 is a coastal cruiser, not a blue water, ocean going vessel. For one, she has a fin keel, not a
larger 3/4 or full keel which adds tremendous stability.

However, the 30' would make an ideal family boat-they are solidly built and have ample cabin space. Mine has the Atomic 4, relatively easy to maintain, but not generally used for long distance cruising where a diesel offers better mileage and can go for hours and days while happily purring along.

In any case, good luck!
