I've broken a rudder in the Chesapeake. It certainly didn't meet your description that day.

I also learned a few things that day.

It was more my fault than the boat's.

How is that any different than when you are moored and the tide grounds your boat? In each case, your boat is left sitting upright in the mud.

I did watch it. They didn't record it -- they just said they anchored in a bad spot and the tide grounded their boat.

I'm just saying it depends on the tide, the bottom, and the winds.

I think it depends more on the quality and construction of the boat. All boats should be able to withstand a light grounding. The couple's grounding was so light, that they were able to free themselves using only their motor with no outside assistance.

You're assuming the tide wasn't higher when they freed themselves.

Well, its a flaw in the Oceanis series and Cyclades, in design and construction, this dudes do a amazing repair with the strap, by the way all the info is here.Rudder Failures - Page 10 - Cruisers & Sailing Forums

I think the sad part of this story is the total ignorance of the builder. No one with cruising experience would build a boat with important bits so difficult to get at.

I think the sad part of this story is the total ignorance of the builder. No one with cruising experience would build a boat with steering gear so difficult to access.

Although the Pacific Seacraft 34 is built much stronger look at the difficulty Ocean Girl is having accessing their steering gear in a current thread. I would sure hate to try to make steering repairs to that in a seaway.

We turned down a Catalina 36 many years ago, it was a boat show model and offered to us at a 'special' show price by the dealer in the UK. It had been fitted with a shoal draught keel which left the rudder then protuding significantly deeper than the keel. The dealer said it was easily solved as they would cut a foot off the rudder bottom for us. We declined.
