i love watching those politically correct anchorers drag all over a quiet anchorage in a slight 30 kt breeze.

Guys hate to say that there isn't any real math to how much chain to have. There are a lot of like, I use and prefer. Chain has been used on boats since they could make it. It was used because the rope at the time was ver easily torn up on the bottom.

We still use that theory still but with technology we still live in the past. All chain rodes will reduce how much you swing.

Anchoring is scope for holding. Ask a anchor manufacture what calculations they use. Basically penetration with the anchor.

Re: Anchor Chain Length Versus Weight

I think when you apply a rule of thumb of scope of between 3:1 to 7:1 depending on the ground you are trying to stay attached to.

Never have i heard of depth plus 2 boat lengths?

Yep i've dragged before unless your in an armchair it's hard not to have!

Strange how on this forum how much attack and aggressive comment towards the poster goes on?

The OP asks a question many provide answers not all will be correct but theres no need for stupid snide remarks i'm afraid!

Have not attacked or been aggressive to the OP... he asked how much chain I stated what I felt he'd need... and my 'stoopid??' reasoning behind it...

Wow you love to perpetuate and at the same time create an argument for the sake of it!
Where did i say you are stupid?
Where did i say the OP?
Why the sarcasim?
Your posting confused many and they also went to pains to understand what you were doing?
I simply said what most cruisers do that i've ever come across. I remarked that yours was a dangerous method, then you qualified it by stating you only shallow anchor!!!

Fine mate but why go on with the comments? I haven't attacked you so what's your problem?

Re: Anchor Chain Length Versus Weight

I think you can't have enough rode out. Chain is nice for chafe and angle off the bottom, but scope is better. I have a chain/nylon set up so I can put more then enough rode out.
As far as swing I've found that the other boats anchored tend to swing with me getting out of my and others way.
Don't want to wake up to this do you?

Also a anchor bigger then your boat needs is a plus.

Since no one else was willing to say it I can not hold it in anymore - Yes!

And thats why in the real world (you know in the USA) people don't wear "knickers", that way they don't get twisted!

:c onfused:- this is my crew don't mess with them or I'm turning them loose.

You cannot have enough; but you can have more than enough?

Re: Anchor Chain Length Versus Weight

OK, I got it, as big an anchor as I can stand, all the chain my locker will hold and a good length of nylon rode just in case.

Now this thread ends, I hope.

Thanks

If I were you I'd go with about 100 ft of that backed with 200 ft of 5/8 nylon brait. Brait falls much more compact into the locker and that should give you enough chain out to handle bottom abrasion and keep your nylon off the bottom.

(edited chain size)
It's true that braided line is softer and lies more compact in the anchor locker. However, my experience with a 12-strand braided rode is that it will have a tendency to wrap around the gypsy when raising the anchor instead of coming off smoothly. By chance, just today my brother told me that his friend replaced his 3-strand nylon rode with braided only to go back to the 3-strand after one cruise because of the same problem.
