Re: Am I Nuts ?

Zeehag...You are absolutely right...I had a 47 Vagabond ..That is the boat that I sailed from Shilshole Bay to Galveston Bay...It too is somewhat a porky pig boat ...Until we where midway across the Gulf ...On a February night...Before 0100...We ran head on into a very powerful cold front...With 55 knot winds out of the north /north east...And 6 meter seas...I was very happy that my that my porky pig Bill Garden boat...Was what she was...No she never did point...But she sure was a great comfort to know ..That she could take you home...Even when the crew had their doubts...These boats that don't point to weather...Sure do handle the rough stuff...Now I have a good feeling about what we can expect from Wanderer..Yea, she is not going to point...But i bet we can still cook when others or questioning if they will ever eat again...What a great comfort...To know the only real worry is that my boat wont point to weather...

Re: Am I Nuts ?

also everything is easily accessed for repairing...lol not able to be said by those telling us our boats are crap because they dont point---lol is sooo much more to life than sailing INTO weather......gotta LOVE 60-80 kts winds in a garden ketch!!!!!!!!!
prefrontal winds are awesome for sailing these "bricks"--they bring out the best in the boat.

Re: Am I Nuts ?

All my boats pointed great to weather. I never made passage planning with an intention to go to weather! If I had to go to wx... that's when I charged the batteries in gear and she pointed great! Any boat design gets you there, you just have to learn how to use your particular boat. :>)

Re: Am I Nuts ?

Gentlemen it wonderful that you are pleased with your boat(s). I for one want a boat the has a reasonable level of comfort and also can point reasonably well. I did qualify my statement by saying that I DID NOT have much experience sailing the F51. It's just my time in that boat clear indicated that in light airs the boat would not point. That's all.

Re: Am I Nuts ?

solo-- we know these dont point inlight airs---heck-- they dont even MOVE in light airs--light airs , to me, being anything under 15 kts.
as for pointing-- they dont need to point. they sail fine and go where ye send em.

i have been able to pinch pretty good in my formosa 41, so far---- just sayin----

Re: Am I Nuts ?

I always find it funny that these hard core sailors are always in a rush to get to their destination.

Sailing isnt that difficult. Once you know the basics its pretty easy. Tying knots? now thats hard :P

One thing about owning a big boat like this is having a ton of money for fixing up & repairs, or having the knowledge to fix multiple systems in multiple disciplines yourself, and a lot of money. :P

much work doesnt have to be as expensive as it is. it really only takes wads of dough when you want to haul out.

Re: Am I Nuts ?

All you have to be ...Is a little 'NUTTY" like me...NOT KIDDING...It really helps to be a boat nut before buying another boat...And when you go totally nuts...Then you get a Formosa 51...And spend the rest of you life answering e.mails...At this pace...I will never get her in to rehab...But look at all the new friends I have...And also...I can take it off my taxes...And that means paying my two X wife's less ...So I can either buy a big boat...Or pay fat women the rest of my life..I have made up my mind ...To pay fat women less...By buying another fat boat..Sincerely Captain Ron

Re: Am I Nuts ?

I am docked next to one of these boats. They tell me that it was also one of the boats used in the movie. I don't know I have seen stories of 3 boats used and even 5. This one has been reborn from all of the pictures I have seen online and in the movie. I will take some shots of it next time I am at the slip. I have one shot I took the other day of my boat from across the way, you can see just a bit of wanderer in it.

Re: Am I Nuts ?

Hi Zeehag...And Mr.MNO...Just wanted to let you know that things are going OK with Wanderer...I spent this past weekend on her...And we are trying to write a work plan,,,One that will address every structure and system that is on her...I had a lot of marinican neighbors of mine come by and visit...Most of them where very supportive and helpful...I never thought how much this boat means to so many people...So I hope that we do this right ..And make everyone proud to be apart of this insanity...And to all of the 400 plus people that has sent me e.mails...Thanks.. ...S/V Wanderer..PO.Box 1161 Kemah Texas.77565 or ron*at*captain*at*ymail.com...I will try to answer all of your questions...And TRY to keep you all advised as Wanderer enters rehab...Ron

Re: Am I Nuts ?

Hey Mr. MNO...I am not sure that is the Wanderer that we have purchased..I looked at the picture you posted...And that one may not be the one from the movie...There are several boats that I have found that have the same name...There is a Starret Jinks in Water Gate marina in Clear Lake Shores with the same name...I met him on Wanderer..the one that we own...And I can not remember his name...But I do know he is a very good skipper...So there is a good chance that the boat in your picture is not the one from the movie "Captain Ron"..But if you are in the area..just let me know...And you, as the rest are invited aboard...Ron..

Ohhhh KNOTS! When I was i sail school (four years ago) they had to put me in remedial knots! OK that's an exaggeration but you get the point.

Until recently I could make a bowline -- UNLESS someone was watching. Then I over-thought it and couldn't do it. And that was after some hours sitting, watching TV, making knots, often without looking.

Re: Am I Nuts ?

Hey SpeedoWerinFrk...This thread was started by you asking the question..About being NUTS to consider a Formosa 51 as a first time boat...But my answer to you is YES...But it will be the most exciting and most rewarding NUTTY THING you could ever purchase...It will be a LOT of work...They all leak somewhere on the topside...But they also have some of the finest wood work you will ever see...But if you do purchase one...Please let us know...So we can keep tabs on all of us true BOAT NUTS...That should be seeking professional help for our illness...Instead of going crazy ...Speeding our kids inheritance ...And and cheating our X wife's out of hundred's of thousands of $$$$$$$

Re: Am I Nuts ?

wanderer is green with green masts and hasnt had money put on her yet, according to a member of leaky teaky who knows her. is spozed to be in closing now, from what the person said.
there are many wanderers and many formosa 51s--please post pix of yours so we can get off on the boat porn........

a friend of mine fixed one formosa 51 without megabux-- lotsa dough is only necessary if ye pay retail as a habit.
