alternatives to Panama Canal

My vessel is a Vancouver 27 and I am thinking about getting it from the Pacific to the Caribbean. For vessels of that size the Canal is a risky pain. Are there trucking and train options to cross from Mexico or Central America. I once heard of Guatemala Joe's trucking delivering to Rio Dulce? Comments?

Re: alternatives to Panama Canal

By far the cheapest, fastest, easiest would be to trailer it across country yourself.

Specs show a beam for the V 27 maybe a hair over 8'6". Interstate system I think allows a max of 8'6" so you would probably slide by.

Beg, borrow, rent or buy a trailer and tow it. If you buy, resell the trailer when you get to TX or FL, wherever you decide to stop.
The water is always bluer on the other side of the ocean.

Re: alternatives to Panama Canal

Not sure why you think going through the canal in your 27' boat is much different than any other small cruising boat. I'd think it would be easier if anything. Side tying to a tug would be faster and easier. Getting pushed around by ship prop wash is exaggerated. The BS about needing to go 8 knots would be the only problem and there have been thousands of short boats allowed through that cannot do that.
If you have the time, it's an interesting coastline.
