Allied Luders 33

The boat Robin Lee Graham used to finish his historic circumnavigation (1965-70) is for sale. Gonna go look at "Dove II" as soon as I can arrange it.

Looks to be in good shape, but the Westerbeke engine has 3000 hours on it. Would be a cool boat to own just for the historic value, but it's expensive to rehaul or replace engines.

Westerbeke is not a manufacturer of engines. They are a converter. That is, they buy so-called "short blocks" and marinize them, adding alternators, heat exchangers, tranmissions, instrument packages, wiring harness, water lift pump, etc. and paint them red. For many years they converted Perkins engines, particularly in the smaller sizes. The waesterbeke 99, 107, and 108 are all similar Perkins engines, many parts being interchangeable. So even if "Westerbeke" parts are unavailable or ungodly expensive, many parts can be found with the Perkins crossover.
Westerbeke now uses Japanese engines, usually Mitsubishi or Isuzu. I have had one of each mentioned, and the only complaints are with what Westerbeke does, not with the short block mfgr.

the luders 33 would be a beautiful boat for 1 or maybe 2 small people. i think the westerbekes have glow plugs which allow them to start up so much better than the yanmars.

But how is the engine running? If it has been well maintained it may have lots of life left.

Engine and history notwithstanding, this is a solidly built boat to take you anywhere – a great old boat. My opinion, but I am biased...
