Alberg 30 ?

Pending survey I have a Alberg 30 under serious consideration.

I have been in the market for over three years for something in the 30-33 ft.
range, and this one seems to be the best of the compromises for me.

To my untrained eyes she looks to be in excellent condition. Lacking only a dingy.
Changing the cooler to fridge, and maybe a airfoil spreader,
along with a small dingy are all I want to add asap.
Seasonal( April or May to Sept. or Oct.)U.S. Coastal cruising is the planned use.

I have scoured the net and learned much, but always looking to learn more.
Looking for further info/insights/wisdom regarding the Pros and Cons of this boat.

Not owned one but they seemed to be a loved design.

Great boat and good concept cruising coastwise. Why not?

Re: Alberg 30 ?

Hello Andrew,

I have a similar boat but the Alberg would also be one I'd definitely consider. They have a good reputation.
Check: The Alberg 30 Sailboat : Bluewaterboats.org

and:

Atom Voyages - 1972 Alberg 30 Refit - Part One (Exterior)

and:

Atom Voyages - Good Old Boats List

Good luck!

Re: Alberg 30 ?

Hi, if memory serves, there's an owners association for the class. And there's also a prize winning film where a gent (the designer/creator of some wind vane self steering gear) went around the world in one. Just have a look here https://www.youtube.com/results?sear...ry=jean+du+sud
Yep, class association & lots of other stuff alberg 30 association - Bing
Plus, a plethora of reviews alberg 30 review - Bing

They're small size wise, but have racked up a lot of ocean miles. Solid boats, built mostly in the early days of fiberglass.
Watch the movie of the circumnavigation if it's still posted (movies come & go on youtube), it's quite good.

Good luck!

Your thinking of Yves Gélinas. He is the designer of the Cap Horn self-steering rig which he first designed for his around the world trip aboard Jean Du Sud, indeed an Alberg 30.

Re: Alberg 30 ?

I don't own an alberg but my brother does. Fantastic boats. I had a neighbour who lived aboard year round on his Alberg 30.
Pros
They're prolific,
They're very heavily built and robust.
They are both seaworthy and seakindly
They have a full keel which a lot of people hate on, but that is part of what makes them so tough and sea kindly, so I consider it an asset depending on your application.
Cons- small interior for their length.
They're old
They have a full keel, which somewhat restricts their maneuverability.
My personal opinion- fantastic boats.

Re: Alberg 30 ?

The designer of the Cape Horn self steering gear sailed an Alberg 30 around the world. He made a video of the voyage that is available on his website. A few Superlatives

Re: Alberg 30 ?

Thanks one and all.

Good stuff on the French-Canadian guy.

I knew about him, and even read some stuff on him, but didn't know about the YouTube stuff...

My neighbor has one, lovely boat. Supposed to be rather tricky to reverse!

Interesting. I also know Yves Gelinas. A fabulous sailor and hugely creative spirit. He wants to join us on our RTW... Perhaps to sample some fast and comfortable passages

Re: Alberg 30 ?

I already have one picked out, but thanks for the tip.

You might want to let the yard owner know that he can post a free add here
on CF. A few photos of the boat will stir up more interest.

Re: Alberg 30 ?

I have a friend who owns one. Good, solid, simple boats. They are old, so will have all the possible problems older fibreglass boats face. I'd look for deck issues. Portlights may be leaking unless they've been updated/maintained. They are a fullish keel, but surprisingly maneuverable (at least I consider them so, from my perspective as another full-keel owner).

Interior is small by modern standards. The V-berth and head, especially so. You'll obviously look critically at the standing rigging and the engine. Many came with Atomic 4s. Nothing wrong with that engine, but will need to have been well maintained, or you may need to re-power.

A well-maintained or renewed Alberg 30 would be a fine coastal boat. Many have crossed the big blue.
