Re: Alberg 22 capabilities: How far out would you sail?

I have a friend who has had one for 35 years. He has over-nighted with a family of five on it (including a toddler, who is now all grown up) numerous times.

You will be hard pressed to find a better 22 foot boat. That said, it is a 22 foot boat.

You will give out before it does in any conditions.

Classic beauty! This is what a sailboat is supposed to look like.

My thinking is that type of boat is great for what you propose. As mentioned , another 2-4 ft gets you a bit more. Maybe an inboard you can charge batteries from etc. But that's up to you.

Carl Alberg certainly drew lovely boats.

We at one time owned and sailed a South Coast 23, also an Alberg design. Very Sea Kindly design, and tough. Our very first sail was New Orleans, LA to Ocean Springs, MS. Still miss that boat. She had the same feel as our current William Atkin cutter.

Congratulations! A real beauty and a great choice. How'd the trailering go?

A 26' full keel boat would be a lot harder to trailer & getting that kind of draft in & out of the water can be a real challenge. As usual everything with boats is a trade off but I think that for trailering this is a great choice.

My favorite small sailboat is the Falmouth Cutter which is trailerable at 22' LOD.

What a great looking vessel! Definitely a classic!
that little Alberg will do you just fine with a little planning and weather watching.

Re: Alberg 22 capabilities: How far out would you sail?

Had a few issues trailering. The tongue weight might have been too heavy for the vehicle that I used and the trailer and vehicle would bounce in unison sometimes going over rough roads. Or maybe the tongue is too short. Need to look into a fix for that.

Getting it across the border had me worried quite a bit but I was able to do it without too much trouble luckily, other than a long wait to fill out some paper work. I had heard of many people being unable to import a trailer that indicated it was homebuilt on its title and had heard about some lengthy and detailed inspections that could be conducted on the boat and trailer to ensure they met all the qualifications set forth by the NHTSA. I was worried that the trailer and boat may not have met all these standards but kind of just said screw it and gave it a shot. I had no brakes on the trailer and no license plate. It was also home built. I did have all the documentation (title for boat and trailer) and proof of purchase, so I believed that helped. Needless to say, I'm happy I was able to get through customs and have an official legal clearance to import the boat into the US.

Going to try to sail it next week in the Gulf of Mexico if I can get it ready in time and find a functioning outboard motor. Fingers crossed.

Thanks everyone for the compliments on the boat.
