Affordable quality cruiser under 100k for coastal cruising

I passed my sailing exams and want a fun live aboard well built coastal cruiser boat under 100k that I can sail in San Francisco as well as down to Mexico.

You'll have to refine your requirements a bit, as there are thousands of boats that meet your criteria, and would work.

Your personal preferences should drive that choice.

Nice galley and settee
Short hand sail ability
Self tacking with easy winches for single hand sailing

Good craftsmanship

Decent electronics GPS
Solid engine

These requirements mean you are looking at 40+ feet.

With your price range and other requirements, I think you are going to want to avoid anything much over 40 feet. I would focus on boats 38 - 44 feet.

Question. Why the 2 cabin/2 head layout? Guests? Family? Under 100k is realistically going to limit you to around 40' to get that layout. Anything much bigger than that under 100k is probably going to have some problems to work out.

When you say "nice galley and settee, you kind of need to be more specific. That means different things to different people. Some like a U or L shaped galley. Others like a straight galley. Same with settee. Do you want a U, L or straight? A U on one side and straight on the other?

Dont worry so much about the electronics too much. They're probably one of the easiest things on the boat to upgrade/replace. And if they're outdated, you may be able to negotiate the price down a bit on the grounds you're going to have to replace them. But as long as they work, why bother, right?

Same goes for the winches. They're fairly easy to replace. If the ones on board require too much force to easy use, oversize em or replace them with electrics (or buy a power drill and adapter for 1/10 the cost).

Keep an eye open for a Kelly Peterson 44 or Formosa 46. They can sometimes be had for around 100k and would seem to meet all your requirements. Good luck and happy hunting!

Sun Odyssey 43 DS. Some are getting down to 100 (Sunsail have one in Vounaki Greece for 64k euros) Very comfortable cruiser. Aft cabins can be converted into the largest king, king sized stateroom ever. Front cabins can be converted into bow bed and lounge. Very popular in the Med.

I posted 3 nice canidates above. If it were me I'd go for the Catamaran then the Hunter. Both of the boats are comfortable and appear to be well equiped.

I would get an older Valiant 40 (gee, I did) or a K-P 44. It can get a little rough outside the gate so really you are looking for a voyager in that range. And, coming back from Mexico, you really need one with large tanks and the ability to go to wind. I would sell you mine, but with 6 years of renovations it would be more like 160K.
