You'd think the closer to the metacenter (longitudinal axis) the better. No idea about higher/lower waterline stuff.

If your bunk/berth is above the water line then you have a better chance of sleeping warmly. If your bunk/berth is at the water line or below it you chance of sleeping warmly is about NIL! Even with bulkhead insulation.
Now which berth do you want on this trip?

when it is hot,the bunk with the best ventilation,when it is very hot the lower bunk is better as hot air rises and the deck head gets hot................

In an uninsulated boat a berth placed low will be noisy. That's why I will sleep in the windward one on a crossing.

This concern for height may carry over from cruise ships. You do not want a berth below the waterline on a cruise ship - you can't see out and it is noisy. You're also the first to go if your skipper pulls a Titanic. On a sailboat you're usually tired enough to fall asleep in whatever berth is available.

In a seaway, the most sleep-inducing place is on a beanbag on the sole between the saloon berths right over the keel. That's where the movement is slowest, and it's comforting to know you can't fall any further.

I made that statement last year on here and everyone thought I was nuts... good to meet a fellow 'experienced sailor'...

and its the fastest place to spring into action from... no crawling/squirming outa bunks...

Organising dive trips to the GBReef in my youth one of the motor trawlers I used had several aft bunks down low near the prop shafts.

Always let other fight for the ones up foward and high.

I haven't owned a boat that was capable of having a permanent berth below the water line. It takes one hell of a large boat to get enough realestate to fit a permanent below the waterline berth. Having said that, My wife always took the leeward berth and I slept on a ThermaRest camping mattress on the sole. It was really comfortable and had the least motion of anywhere I could have slept. I don't like lee cloths and getting in and out of transom/pilot berths is an accident waiting to happen.
