A good rigging tension gauge that goes to 12mm??

Hey all, need a little hand.... I'm looking to check the tune on my rigging, which has a few 12mm stays in addition to 8 and 10mm.... all I can find from Loos are gauges that go to 10mm.... can I extrapolate, or will they not work at all? Is there one y'all can recommend that goes to 12mm wire diameter?

Cannot extrapolate.
The Loos PT-3 Metric* only fits Cable Sizes 7mm, 8mm, 9mm, 10mm

In their literature Selden describes how to use a 2m ruler (or a stick) to measure the rig tension. Maybe try that instead?

Re: A good rigging tension gauge that goes to 12mm??

Are you familiar with what's called the "folding rule method"?

That's what mrm is talking about.

Download a copy of "Hints and Advice for Rigging and Tuning a Selden Mast". With luck, you'll find a copy at:

http://www.seldenmast.com/files/1456.../595-540-E.pdf

Take a Captain Cook at page 32 (or thereabouts) for the "folding rule method".

The worked example is for 15% of the breaking load of a particular 1x19 wire rope. I think you'll find enough info to work out how to get to approximately whatever tension you need for 1x19 wire of 12 mm. You'll find a table of breaking loads for generic 1x19 wire rope up to 16 mm on page 31.

I think Ivar Dedekam, in his "Sail and Rig Tuning," also covers the technique. My copy is on board (I think), so I cannot guarantee it.

Re: A good rigging tension gauge that goes to 12mm??

Just a note that for those with 5/16" 1x19 SS wire stays and shrouds, 8 mm is very, very close (7.94 mm) to that Imperial measure, to the point where I would not hesitate to just buy the metric version, given that I would likely rerig in metric outside of North America in 8 mm and would therefore buy the metric Loos gauge instead of the SAE/Imperial version.
