77 Cascade 29

I saw this boat last week. It's been sitting around unattended for many months. Found out it needs the following:

New propeller (has 12hp Yanmar diesel)
Overhaul of electric (nothing electric seems to work)
New keel bolts.

I have no idea what this would cost to fix.

Rigging and sails are in good shape. Boat was outhauled three years ago.

They arae asking 4k and are motivated.

So how much would repairs like this run me?

Thanks

Re: 77 Cascade 29

New prop, $200-350 depending on the prop you got and if you could do the work yourself. If the boat is out of the water easier, in the water you need snorkeling gear or to pay for a haulout.

Keelbolts would depend on the type of bolts used. Do the bolts thread into the keel itself or is there a flange at the top of the keel and the bolts are thrubolts? If the former then you can probably do the one at a time in the water. If the later you will need to haul-out. Figure $100 for the bolts (these are big bolts and may be a special alloy such as Monel) and $25 for a tube of appropriate sealer.

Electrical harder to say, because the system as a whole doesn't work means that you don't know which components are bad:
Wiring,
Panel
breakers
batteries,
alternator
regulator

It could be as simple as a corroded connection to the batteries which would entail cleaning the terminal or as bad as a lightning strike in which case the whole system would need replacing or it could be somewhere in between.

As a guess, assuming alternator& regulator still work, you could do a very basic electrical system including, batteries, all new wiring, panel, breakers, steaming and sailing lights and interior lights, VHF and antenna, basic depthsounder and basic knotmeter/log for $1500-2k.

All told I would expect to drop about $3k including haulout and other unforseen issues.

For $4K with that kind of work to do, I would jump at it in a heart beat, especially if it was a bowsprit version, though I think this boat is too early to be a bowsprit boat. Several Cascade 29's have been RTW and are still offered for new build, 52yr after first being built.

Where is this boat?

Re: 77 Cascade 29

Adelie,

Thanks,

I'm not sure whether there is a flange or not. I would be hauling the boat out for survey anyway. The boat was surveyed three years ago by the current owner, at which time these items were discovered. Repairs obviously weren't done. The guy probably didn't have an extra 3k laying around.

The engine is a one stroke Yanmar.

Boat is in Hawaii.

Re: 77 Cascade 29

I assume you mean 1cylinder Yanmar.

Are you intending to keep it in HI, move it back to the mainland, or keep going south and west?

Find out how old the rigging is, does the current owner have receipts from whenever the wire was replaced, or does he just have a date? At 10yr I would be thinking about replacement, at 12yr I would be actively doing so, especially in a tropical saltwater locale.

Is there a website or online ad to look at?

Re: 77 Cascade 29

In most Cascade 29s the keel is flanged just like my Cascade 42. That means that a haul out is necessary to replace the bolts. The bolts are more than likely steel to match the keel but you can take a magnet to them to see. They are not hard to change and if the yard you are in will allow you to grind the glass covering the heads then shouldn't be hard to remove. I've replaced 10 of them on my boat.
Usually the bolts go up through the keel flange on each side into a (floor) cross beam and are bolted to the top of the floor with a big washer under the nut.
$4K is a good price considering 7 years ago they sold for $15K.
kind regards,

Re: 77 Cascade 29

I just saw the photos. Those toerails are $1000 a section if you buy them new. It is the bowsprit model. These were sold as unfinished hulls in some cases but in this case it looks like at least the cabin top was factory. The factory finished boats were extremely well put together.
kind regards,

Skipper John

Maybe I'll put in a lowball offer contingent on survey and sea trial.

I'm not too mechanical and would rely on Keehi Marine to do the work.

Oh, also notice the two Lewmar self tailing winches. At one time, this was probably a real nice sail boat.

Re: 77 Cascade 29

Why do you think it needs new keel bolts? They are a tapered bolt that do not have a hex head.
Cascade may have some in stock.
Like Skiprjohn said the kell bolts go through a flange on the cast iron keel then up through the floor timbers.
Check the floor timbers and the shear clamp for rot. The replacement of the shear clamp SUCKS. Trust me I know. The toe rails are not make any more the die got broke.
If the sails, rigging, floor timbers and shear clamp are in good shape sounds like an easy fixer.

Re: 77 Cascade 29

Tim,

The guy who showed me the boat mentioned the keel bolts needing replacement. Maybe I misunderstood him.

Floor timbers and sheer clamps. Now we're getting technical. Hopefully, this would show up in a survey.

$4k is lowball.

Re: 77 Cascade 29

Okay, 4k offer contingent a survey finding the boat in a safe seaworthy condition. So they would have to fix the prop and replace the keel bolts.

Can't even motor to drydock for a full survey with a broken prop.
