$60k Bottom Job

Looking at a nice boat. A Sceptre 41, asking price $174.5K. A lot of money, but in line for these well thought of long distance pilot house fast cruisers.

This example has a recent $60K bottom job (1/3 of the total price!?!??) and rudder post base rebuilt and strengthened. Boat has a foam cored glass hull.

Sounds like a bad grounding to me. I tend not to trust cored hulls due to potential for water retention.

Even if great repair, is this boat worth serious consideration?

You're gonna experience buyer's remorse. Why compound it for a boat you tend not to trust and in a buyer's market? As for asking price, some people are very in love with their boats.

To say it has a damage history is only half the story. The other half is what was affected, how was it repaired, with what materials, any modification to the structure, how skilled the craftsman?

Re: $60k Bottom Job

It all depends on who did the work and how well it was done. I would want to see all pics and invoices as well as other work done by that yard. Could be it needed to be recored do to water intrusion as you say and was done 100% perfectly.

Seems way overpriced to start with though.

I do boat repairs for a living; but I would imagine you would consider buying a house with a completely new roof and perhaps an exterior wall rebuilt and reinforced without a second thought?
