50' Herreshoff Ketch 1978

Can anyone give me some feed back on a 50' Herreshoff Ketch 1978? I'm considering purchasing one for a family of 5 for blue water cruising.

Thanks,

RWC

A seminal designer but it will be an older design if it is truly one of his:

Be nice if they would have listed the builders name.

It seems that they may have been built by David Cheng (D. Cheng Boat Works?), in Hong Kong.

Why is everyone sofixated on who built it?, it doesnt matter, what does matters is the build quality and that the purchase price offers good value for your money.

Looks like a Francis Herreschoff, not a Nat Herreschoff design. They built quite a few of the Mobjack and Bounty designs in Whangarei, New Zealand.

Sure it does. Not all builders are created equally and even a good survey can miss things so builder reputation counts.

The reason we are fixated on builder is because it could have been built by Joe Alcoholic that has never seen FRP before and is riding on the archetic's reputation.

Would be like buying a Bentley made by a street sweeper.

Can't say I agree...There are some builders out there with terrible quality or that at some point used bad resin for a few years. Of course I would not mention any manufacturers here as to stir up a hornets nest.

Re: 50' Herreshoff Ketch 1978

I am a boatbuilder and repair boats daily, ive seen absolute crap from big name builders and top quality work from some guy in his backyard, what maters is build quality and yes, unless you have actually built boats from scratch and have real knowlege of all the aspects, hire a good surveyor but again finding a good one is as hard as finding a good boat, lots of surveyor have no real build experience at all but they have the credentials to impress.

Re: 50' Herreshoff Ketch 1978

At it turns out, Caribbean 50' Center Cockpit Ketch was designed by Halsey Herreshoff, the grandson of L. Francis and built by David Cheng in Hong Kong in 1978.

Anyone ever sail on one?

Thanks for all the feedback.
