40' Hardin Sea Wolf

Hey All,

Looking at 40-45 foot boats to fix up and sail from the east coast of the US to South America. I came across a 40' fiberglass Hardin Sea Wolf. Any advice from someone who knows these at all? Is this boat capable of this journey? Any info is helpful.

Sure, very capable boats for ocean sailing. Do a search here on CF and you'll find several threads on them.

beautiful boats-- garden design, built in taiwan. formosa and ct are similar. all have same problems if and when they do have those, and previous owners make a difference.
there is no such thing s a deal breaker with these aas they are the easiest boat i have ever seen to repair while underway, and other times repairs are needed. engine to shaftlog is all easily accessed and able to be gotten to without becoming a freeking monkey.fabrication is easy to accomplish.... sail decent also. take winds wonderfully well. enjoy the refit and have great time sailing her.
when you have her in a 60 kt wind, sailing 8+ kts, yelling YEEEEHHHHAAAAWWW!!!!!!
you will remember i sed they are awesome ....
they are actually 41 ft measuring 40.9 ft lod.

Watch out for deck problems with these things. They were notorious.

the deck problems stem from original owners who do no tknow how to properly care for teak decking. the decks were screwed into the ply deck. the original owners did stuff like sand the deck---BAD BAD BAD po....... they varnished the decks-- bad bad bad.
they did NOT douche the deck with sea water daily, which is proper treatment of teak deck. so-- the way to preserve the teak deck now, should you wish to so do, is to carefully lift the teak off the ply, glass the ply, filling the holes, then carefully place the teak over either epoxy or epoxied wood strips so there are no penetrations of the deck. then treat the teak as spozed to have done from day one with sea water.

celesial sailor-- there are many more things to boats than just the deck. formosa/hardin sea wolf/ct 41s are awesome boats panned by those who caqnnot be bothered to properly care for the decking and other beautiful and functional things from wooden boatville--- is an art to maintaining these. cannot be lazy nor a remote owner-- must be douched with sea water DAILY or will have problems. allow the teak to shrink away from the polysulfide then bad bad bad. is the function not of the boat design and build but of the original owner and the lazy maintenance practices therefrom.
these boats are THE easiest boats to repair and maintain i have ever seen, and i LOVE mine. sails like a dream and is easy to be able to leave helm to raise sails-- easily single handed. just dont fall asleep on a lee shore.

Always loved the look of those boats. You really need a black one with a pirate flag! I have seen later Hardins with fiberglass decks with no teak. That's the one you want. JMHO but...No teak deck is easy to repair...
