4.96 Tons for My 28' . . . Is this Possible ?

I was looking for some data on my hinterhoeller 28 and most online data says the boat is 6000lbs, however the boat was officialy wheighted at 4.96 tons this is aboute 10,000lbs.
is this even possible for such a small boat?

just curious but if somone has the right data for this boat id love to hear it.

Water absorbsion and added gear are major factors.

Does the boat float on her original lines?

This would mean 4/6 which makes the boat 66% heavier. I do not think water absorption nor stuff accumulation would explain the number.

You sure the weighing was correct?

As asked above - how does she float relative to her original waterline?

My own boat about 33% heavy in full cruising mode - water, fuel (and an old heavy engine), supplies, spares and all that we collected in the last 7 years - and man you can really see it how deep she floats. Too deep!

this tonnage come from the last 3 digits of the engraved serial number, a serial I posted last month to inquier about the ships legal statue. I did not buy that boat but an other similar with legal papers.

I presume the boat was lifted and scaled befor they engraved those numbers?
as for floting yes she floated on the water linge without any provisions on board.

If the boat floats on her lines then her weight will be very close to her designed displacement. Hmmm.... ???? Right? Dispalcement = weight. Or something like this.

Could be that those numbers refer to the Gross registered Tonnage, which is an old measure of interior volume based on 100 cubic feet of volume being 1 ton. In your case that would be 496 cubic feet of interior space. Main Cabin, head, locker and Vee berth, forepeak and engine room. That seems about right. I had my Grampian 26 measured once and it came out to about 3.9-4.1 tons if I can remember correctly. If you subtract the forepeak, engine room, and head, you get the Net registered tonnage, which is the cargo volume you could carry. Long time ago, the memory is getting a bit fuzzy on that.

I'd say the displacement weight being 6,000 lbs is reasonable in your case. The Gramp was 5400lbs. Espina has a Gross of 7.85 tons, net of 7.28 and weighs in at 15,500 lbs. Sabre Dance has a Gross of 13.63, net of 13.33, and weighs in at 20,800 lbs if the crane scale was correct.

Best way to find out displacement weight is to take her to a highway weigh scale. Then launch the boat and reweigh the trailer/cradle or what ever.
