37 Foot Cutter With Tiller

Currently sailing a Compac23 but want to move up to a cruising boat. My ideal boat would be a five year old Pacific Seacraft 37, but with tiller.

What is out there that comes close?

Be grateful for any input.

Thanks.

I met a fella a few years ago with either a PSC34 or 37 with a tiller. Why not just buy what you want.

Ah. There is the rub. I can't find what I want.

My target is a 35-37 footer with a tiller. The ones that I know of that fit that bill are quite old and require a lot of maintenance (the Cape George cutter comes to mind). I use a ten year old PSC 37 as a boat to compare others to as it has all that I would like...except a tiller.

Well, I guess you’re not interested in this then. Rafiki-37, but they’re all too old for you.

It is rare to find cruising boats in the USA that are 37 feet long and have a Tiller, instead of a wheel.

So, if you have a strong preference for a Tiller, you should consider a "Wheel to Tiller Conversion." It may be possible on some boats, but difficult on some boats.

I like a Tiller. So I have considered this for a future boat.

Here is a link to previous discussions about this topic in CF.

Hope that helps.

The Rafiki is LOVELY looking boat. But realistically beyond my maintenance skill set.

Re: 37 Foot Cutter With Tiller

You can convert most wheel boats to tiller, particularly if the rudder post comes up to the cockpit floor/seat with an access panel for the emergency tiller. It's not terribly complicated.

- Remove the pedestal, quadrant, etc., patch the deck.
- Buy a tiller, tiller head, and deck seal, and suitable shifter/throttle.
- Extend the post with a sleeve and tube to the required height
- Relocate the shifter throttle and install, put the rest together
- Go sailing

I know quite a few people who've done this. If you're lucky selling the wheel, pedestal, and binnacle covers the cost of the conversion.

So instead of looking for boats with a tiller, look for boats that can be easily converted to tiller. Your choices will open up dramatically. That said, you're going to want to look for boats that balance well. A wheel often makes a boat's weather helm less apparent which will become more of an issue when you switch to tiller.

You know you best, but I think you’re going to find that any cruising boat will require significant maintenance skills. It’s just like a house; maintenance will be required no matter what the age.

Age (of a boat) is only loosely correlated to maintenance. Design, construction, location, and how they are used will be a bigger factors. If you start with a well-maintained older boat you won’t necessarily end up with more maintenance issues compared to a newer one. It’s all very specific.

When you own a boat, you either have the means to pay for its maintenance and repair, or you go the better route and learn fascinating skills and technologies to do the jobs yourself. I do most of my own work; this way, when something goes wrong with a repair, the idiot who did it is always close at hand.

You can even buy it new! It has been almost the same boat since the early 80s. So you can pick and choose age. It also came with a wheel, so you will have to look around. Beauitful boat.

There is a Cal40 with tiller on Seattle CL. The price is so low, I expect that it needs quite a lot of TLC...

From what I have read the Pacific Seacraft 37 and before that the Cruising Consultants built Crealock 37 were designed to be tiller steered.

They do come up from time to time.

Re: 37 Foot Cutter With Tiller

Not so much for the OP, who likes pricier boats and wants a cutter, but here is a 35 foot Ketch I just spotted that has a Tiller, and a nicely finished interior. asking Price is $15k.

It may suit someone who reads this thread because of an interest in a Tiller boat.

Re: 37 Foot Cutter With Tiller

A few Valiants were sold with tillers. Talk about an easy conversion. Dead simple and suddenly the cockpit is huge. I almost went that route during my deck refit but had too much else to do.
