35-40' Cruising Boat

I am considering a boat change.
I currently sail an 85 Pearson 34 along the coast of Maine and across to Nova Scotia. She's been a great boat for 9 seasons with me and I have kept her up well.
At 62 I think about a more seakindly hull, cutter or double headsail rig for heavy weather options, and a windlass for my back. The 35'+ range works well for me because I often single hand. Going south for a winter is a probably remote possibility but keeping under 6' draft would probably be good.
I am interested in suggestions of what to look at with a budget up to 150K. Like every other schmuck, I hope to not sacrifice too much in speed for the greater comfort.
A broker has suggested post 1990 vintage Island Packets saying they sail better than the earlier ones.
Whadyathink?

I think brokers, in particular, like Island Packets.

Love our 1999 IP380. Great choice!

Re: 35-40' Cruising Boat

If you are concerned about performance, look at the PHRF numbers of boats you are considering. The Pearson 34 rates 144. The IP 38 (my reference doesn't show a 380, so it may be a different boat) rates 168 - about 24 seconds a mile slower. You may be disappointed by a boat that much slower than what you have now - especially if bigger boats are supposed to be faster than smaller ones. Your Pearson could sail circles around a boat that rates 168. In comparison, a Tartan 372 rates 129. Happy Hunting!

Re: 35-40' Cruising Boat

Here's a short list of boats I found from a quick search on Yachtworld in your area (Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts). Some of these boats are older than your Pearson, but all of them are cutter rigged, draw less than 6' and most of them are leaning towards a heavier displacement concept which should give you a good solid safe boat. In fact, there's a handful in there designed by Robert Perry, so most of these boats are similar.

As far as Island Packets are concerned, I can't attest to whether the older models sail better or worse than newer models, but in your size range, you should take note that the IP 38 has two heads whereas the IP 380 only has one. Not sure if that is of concern to you.

1984 Baba 40

1983 Cabo Rico 38

1987 Hans Christian 38 Mk II

1986 Island Packet 38

1989 Pacific Seacraft 37 (w/ custom hard dodger)

1982 Tayana 37

1986 Tashiba 36

1994 Island Packet 35

2001 Saga 35

+1 for the Pretorian. Wauquiez (the older models) extremely well built and they sail well!

Pacific Seacraft 34, very rugged, sea kindly, fast enough, and your budget will get you a mid 90s or newer ready to cruise. I mostly single hand mine . There are 2 or three for sale in Maine now.

I guess this is the part where everyone recommends the boat they're on.

Re: 35-40' Cruising Boat

Since you're looking for performance and comfort...Sorry but IP's are pigs, as are Cape George's. For performance, comfort (there is a number for this). Cabo Rico 38, hands down. Well put together.
My friends just returned from a circumnavigation on their Tayana 37 pilothouse. I asked them if they had to do it over again, would they choose the same boat. Answer: No. Perry designed a good boat but not one of those Taiwanese have ever been to sea. They had rigging failures with the chain plates and inaccessibilities in the engine area.
I also like the Pretorian or any of the Wauquiez line. Everyone I've seen have great chainplates.
