Welcome to CF!

Wowza... ya got me there with the pilot house version... I thought it was only a rumor!

Don't know of rig/mechanicals/windage differences... But the regular 33OI sails stiff, sturdy, and not a racer... Comfortable...

Have a look at
Used 1980 Morgan Oi Motorsailer, Pensacola, Fl - 32507 - BoatTrader.com

1980 33' Morgan Pilothouse for sale in New Bern, North Carolina | All Boat Listings.com

One ad says that there were only 37 built. And I notice they both have 65HP motors

Re: 33 Morgan pilothouse out island

I've been aboard one at the dock, so no sailing experience, but my observations are that this is not going to weather without the engine (lost of windage) and seeing as there was no boom on the one I've been on (by design) the main may not be much more than a steadying sail.

There is one named Cookie Monster sitting on the hard at Dutchmans Cove Marina in Penetanguishene Ontario. The hull and rig look very good, I see the boat often. It is for sale, or sold and may need new machinery. Contact DCM via their website if interested.

No boom???

I would say they sail NOTHING like a regular OI ... Or SAIL AT ALL for that matter!

The one(s) in the ads above appear to have a furling loose footed sail.
But then, a lot of Wharram cats don't have a boom either, and they sail fairly well

But wharram cats have enough beam to keep the foot of the sail tight through a wide arc. Not so for the very narrow sliding traveller arrangement on this thing.

I'm also going to take a stab and say that the wharram also does not have a full keel, and sherman tank displacement...

Re: 33 Morgan pilothouse out island

I owned an OI 33 for a few years back in the 80's and liked the boat for what it was. I put an offer on a Pilothouse and backed out after the sea trial a few years ago for various reasons.

Our criteria is we were looking for a loop sailboat a few years ago and wanted a pilothouse. The OI made the short list since I was already familiar with the boat, but I was not happy with it after sailing it as it was less of a compromise and felt more like Frankenstein. Even with the sheets lead into the pilothouse, it was difficult at best. Moving around on deck not super great either. I am actually a fan of the OI Design on a big tank setup for living aboard and cruising comfort, especially at anchor, but this and the Watkins 27 PH are my least favorite with throwing a wheel house on a current design instead of a fresh design.

We ended up choosing a Cape Dory 300 instead and it is a good compromise boat that sails well.

Re: 33 Morgan pilothouse out island

Can't speak for the 33 OI Pilothouse, But for a comfortable cruiser it should be great.
We love our 512 OI with a roller main . It is not fast, although on a reach I have beaten a few "faster" boats like a Whitby.
They are built like the proverbial S***house and can be driven hard and put away wet.
Don't do racin, but at the end of a passage you will be dry and rested.

I worked on a friends Out Island 33 with pilot house. Quite a few hours I spent doing small stuff like replacing the Head gasket and repairing the windshield wiper System. It sailed Fair in good weather. Mac

Re: 33 Morgan pilothouse out island

Hi,
I looked at Cookie Monster,
It is a pretty cool project boat but if that doesn't stop you then it would be great for a cruising couple. It is fully loaded with electronics & amenities.
You will need to do a fair amount of Repair and restoration topsides and I noticed that there is an open chunk around the rudder post. Otherwise the bottom looked pretty good.
It looked to me that it was shoddily repaired in the past and has since deteriorated. This shouldn't be a show stopper if you get it for the right price.
Also the engine needs a rebuild.

I ended up purchasing a Morgan 37 OI Sloop because of the VG engine, rigging, hull & deck condition but as importantly the cabin space for taking kids & grandkids for weekend junkets. The trade off is that the cabin interior stove head & refridgeration needs help.

If you go for it, negotiate hard and GET A SURVEY, they are very motivated to sell.

Best of luck!
Bob

Re: 33 Morgan pilothouse out island

I have sailed an OI 33 in heavy weather form St. Pete to Key West. Definitely appreciated the heavy build! However, a fellow club member has an OI 33 pilothouse. I haven't sailed on her but he always motors every place we go as a club. The biggest drawback of the pilothouse design is the lack of a cockpit. The cockpit is on about 4 feet and is tucked down behind the coach roof.
