And Epic fail.

2012 "Macif" 60ft, Francois Gabart, FRA, 534.48M, 22.27kts

This is the previous monohull record set in the 2012 Vendee Globe, single handed.

Re: 24 hour monohull distance record broken

Just to put this in perspective, at the ends of their respective 24 hour runs, Banque Populaire would be 290 miles ahead of Comanche.

So Mr Clark, sailing along at his "record" setting average speed would watch Banque Pop going past TWELVE KNOTS faster.

In about 10 - 15 minutes Banque Pop would be hull down over the horizon. In less than an hour it would be completely out of sight.

"Fastest boat ever built"?

Not even close.

Comanche did it without motoring, though.

"Comanche smashed the monohull 24-hour distance record during the Transatlantic Race from the US to the UK."

Probably means a race record, not an all time world record.

I do miss the days when sailboats were truly such, & not powered by engine driven winches & keels. Not that it isn't fun going that fast on the water mind you.

Now they are coming out with large foiling monos which I'm told will push them into the 40 knot range, perfect for cruising.

Maybe you missed this then:

Quote:
Comanche was built with the ability to sail the boat using only human power, allowing the boat to qualify for record attempts like this. Stan and I decided at that time to sail the boat during the entire time period surrounding any possible 24 hour record in the manual power configuration that the WSSRC requires. Turns out this was probably our best decision of the race so far! - See more at: Comanche Sets Record, Injures Navigator >> Scuttlebutt Sailing News

It was expected and I think that boat can do a lot better then that with a huge crew and all. Just to put things in perspective the Solo sailing record on a monohull almost half the size (an Open 60) is 545.34Nm and I bet that the new generation of Open 60's (IMOCA) with foils will smoke that record on the next vendee.

Re: 24 hour monohull distance record broken

So, this guy has spent a ton of money, he has a gorgeous boat, a gorgeous wife and a top professional crew... but not the fastest boat in the world. I hope that this fact does not keep him from enjoying his life!

BTW, I wonder if the big multis that are faster are any less expensive? they all cost a bomb...

Re: 24 hour monohull distance record broken

I kinda think that this guy could have built any boat he felt like as its chump change for him however I guess he just wanted to have the fastest mono hull. Maybe he will build a multi hull next but I doubt it.

Where ever the boys with unlimited budgets play they seem to want mono hulls. I'm not saying that really big Cats/Tri's are rare just because they are. Look at the choices the rich boys make when they build their 150-200 foot boats, really rare to see a multi hull in this league.
