1GM Yanmar transmission reverse problem

Ok my lil yanmar won't stay in reverse , I have to hold the shift lever "in" reverse. It's a little resistance going from neutral to reverse , just like going from neutral to forward. Forward works great it stays in gear but if you move the shift lever to reverse the lever has a lot of play and you have to apply pressure in the forward direction to make the prop turn. Any ideas? The cable seems ok, I'm not sure what I can do to fix this

Unhook the shift cable from the transmission and manually shift it forward neutral and reverse that will tell you if its a problem with your shift lever or your cable

Spot on advice, you'll determine nothing until you do this.
