I'd bet pretty much nothing at all has been done to the chain plates, so I will have as good a look as I can.
If it's been mostly sitting at the dock and sailed lightly (i.e., not offshore in gales) it's unlikely that water has leaked into the chainplate space. Check to see if there are weep holes below the chainplates, and look for rust stains. If you find any rust, I'd be surprised, but if you do then you need be prepared to inspect and replace if needed.

Re: 1987 Island Packet

A64, looks like a really nice boat in good condition, just not much on board in terms of equipment. Could be a great foundation to build a nice cruiser.

Re: 1987 Island Packet

OK, you guy's found it, just nobody buy it our from under me please?
I too think it would be a nice start for a cruising boat, just have to buy it first, I haven't had good luck so far, one failed survey, two others I wanted sold before I could get ahold of them.

Not real sure why you couldn't cut the top off of an aluminum tank and go back in with a bladder cell though.
I wonder what the failure rate on the IP tanks is?
I've had aluminum tanks go bad pretty fast sitting on a wet support. If not too hard to get out, you can have a new bottom put on pretty reasonable.
I've had SS tank in the bilge go bad in 7 years. Same situation, sitting on a wet support in the bilge. Had a hole or two the size of a pencil eraser.
I have had black iron tanks in the bilge that lasted a lot longer... dont know what the ultimate life was though.
Tanks not under the flor can last a very lnog time.

1987 Island Packet

OK, he accepted my offer, he does have a contingency though, it's a take it or leave it. Of course I do have the right to refuse if it busts survey, just anything I find he won't pay for to be fixed. I came in with a real high amount in escrow to show I was serious and gave him 24 hours to accept or refuse the offfer.
Looking at the boat, I got the strong impression that the owner was tired of the boat, very few personal belongings were on board, oil in the engine was fresh, but the date on the oil filter was summer 2011. I found something in the boat addressed to the owner in Alpharetta Ga., which I think is in Atlanta. Daytona is a long ways from Atlanta.
Oh, and my location will be Gulf Coast, panhandle of Fl.

Re: 1987 Island Packet

I'm sure you've seen this Island Packet 38 as well:

1987 Island Packet IP 38 Cutter (Surveyed $127K) Sail Boat For Sale

Seems to be the same price yet doesn't have full A/C installed, however it does have a wide range of electronics including an SSB. Might help your case on presenting a lower offer?

Yes, this one has sold though, I don't know how much it went for. I've got time to put gear in of my choosing and made my offer based on having to buy the gear. One you sent the link for was one of the two I said I had bought out from under me. I believe that one had 4,000 hours on the engine.
Not sure how much I should say on-line, but I know what the current owner paid for the boat three years ago when he bought it and I'm paying 25% less. This boat I believe has been on the market for two years I think, so current owner bought it and put it back on the market real soon right afterwards.
I assume it's one of the wife won't get on that boat or something similar kind of stories?

a64, I'm really excited for you. If this deal does work out for you, I'm looking forward to see how you choose to outfit her, since my boat is very similar. My fingers are crossed for ya!

Well very first thing will be a windlass, then an autopilot, but I'll start a thread asking about which ones

Re: 1987 Island Packet

Congratulations. It seems like we went through the process with you.

Let us know when the process is completed. I've got some questions for you about the buying process. I'll probably PM you sometime over the next few days.
