1980 30' Hunter - Design Question

I'm just about to place a bid on a sailboat - but I can't tell whether or not the mast goes through the hull or not (due to a manufacturer design of encasing that area with wood).

Feedback?

Cheers!

I'm guessing the mast doesn't go through, the wood is just covering up a support post.
The bigger the boat, the more likely the mast goes to the keel.

My best recollection is that all Hunter 30s have a deck stepped mast and the mast column does not rest on wood. About the only boat I know of with a wood step is a Catalina (only some models) which you should stay away from as the wood rots.

i have a 1980 hunter 33' and the mast is deck stepped, i find it hard tio believe that in the same year a smaller model would have it keel stepped, but as you know with boats its anybodys guess

Under the mast step (deck), the compression post is supported in the bilge by a carbon steel 'I' beam that, given the age of the boat, could have or may be very close to rusting through. This will allow the compression post, mast step and mast to drop enough to screw up the rig.

I owned a 79/30. Had no problems with the I beam, its normally dry where it is located. BUT---be careful of the chain plates. I had a leak around the hanging closet that rotted a panel where one of the chain plates attached. The fix was not hard, just that it did require a fix.

Also check the engine. Mine had a raw water cooled 12HP HORIZONTAL operated piston. That shook the heck out of the boat. I think Hunter changed that engine in 1980 so you might be OK. I later changed the engine to a 15HP freshwater cooled Universal (Kobuta) which ran flawlessly for years.
