1978 Hunter 30'

Hello All,
The first trip out with our (new to us ) Hunter 30' we could only make 2.5 kts under power. its a 12hp Yanmar. What speed should I make?

At least twice that. Is it overdue for a bottom paint job? If so, that and a dirty prop would do it. If not, maybe partially restricted fuel filter on the yanmar. I'm assuming the Yanmar is a 2GM Diesel or similar. Good luck.

yep... GPS or ships speed log?

GPS is more accurate for movement around the globe. But it does not measure speed through moving water very well.

And then if the ships speed log has growth/debris in it , it won't red properly.

So you may not need to blame the engine yet.
