1974 Dufour 27' Sailboat "Thoughts?"

Still on the lookout for a decent boat. Any thoughts on this particular one?
Sails are four years old, and it has a 20 hp Volvo Penta Diesel engine.
The seller says it's in good shape.

Re: 1974 Dufour 27' Sailboat "Thoughts?"

I don't see a link to the vessel in question, Ballenxj, so I'm guessing that it's the one that popped up on eBay today in Richmond, CA. Often, when a boat is donated to a non-profit it's because the owner doesn't expect to be able to sell whatever it is he has and decides to settle for the tax write-off.

That's not always the case, though, and the pictures in the eBay listing seem to show a decent enough vessel. If you can, you should try to get a first-hand look at it. You'll generally see rather quickly why it's being offered "as-is, where-is."

If it's still a sound vessel, though, you could pick up a real bargain.

TaoJones, YUP, that's the one I was looking at. I was just trying to be discreet. Guess it didn't work?
So those boats are fairly sound eh? Thanks.

Dufour made pretty good boats.. one of the pioneers of French production boats that killed of the traditional UK industry the same way the Japanese destroyed the M/bike industry...
Offered good performance, quality and a non traditional comfortable interior compared to what the UK turned out in small boats back then..
Unless there's a major flaw hidden in the detail she's a good starter boat

Thanks Boatman61.
I just got off the phone with Bobby, the guy that is selling it. After a brief conversation with him I determined that he doesn't personally know much about it, and says he will find out more by tomorrow?
Still interesting though.

It is interesting, Bruce.

Are you near enough to Richmond to take a first-hand look at the vessel? Or, if not, do you know anyone in the Bay Area whose opinion you value and who would take the time to do it for you? You may even be able to contact a surveyor there who wouldn't mind giving the Dufour a once-over for you for a token fee.

At the very least, you could probably find someone on CF who could easily drop by the location of the vessel and let you know what he or she sees as the good and bad points. I've had CF members check vessels for me from San Diego to Ft. Pierce while I was on vacation in Colorado.

It's a coarse filter, but it can eliminate a lot of wasted time, effort and expense.

I believe Bobby is affiliated with the non-profit selling the Dufour. The listing indicates that they rely on the assertions of the vessel owner and are not qualified to assess the actual condition of any donated item. That's worth remembering when he gets back to you with more information.

Good luck!

So, Ballenxj / Bruce, did you win the bid for the Dufour 27? Last I saw the bid was about $4200 and there was a lot of activity (many bidders).

TaoJones, No I didn't bid. It still looked like a fair deal, but went past what I was willing to bid. I'm afraid I'll have to wait for another.
