I've been looking at a 1972 Columbia 30. Best I can tell it's an average boat and the early 70s Columbia 30s often sell for a song on the "marginal condition" market.

Don't know much else that may help.

There are some here who have said that Columbia's build quality was not very good and the boats suffered from thin layup in some areas, so the result was oilcanning. But when I owned a Columbia 26 Mk II, my assessment was that it was pretty well built and sailed well, but it was not a boat that had particularly high quality finish on the interior. And I briefly owned a Columbia 34, which was a Bill Tripp design like the 26 Mk II and my assessment was the same.

Who designed the 30?

From what I've seen the early 70s Columbias were all Bill Tripp, including the 30.

Not for sure, but I've seen several ads claim that.

I've seen them range in price from slightly over $20k full fitted with new electronics, radar, etc, all the way down to salvage prices, depending on fitting.

The ballast looks smallish. Look up the numbers if you plan for offshore. The keel attachment looks fragile. The rudder seems exposed. 1973 is an old boat.

But she looks pretty (in my eye). If she serves your purpose and if you find a well maintained one - why not.

I've sailed a Cal 2-30 through the Alenuihaha Channel both ways. It took the seas well but was a bit squirrely downwind in 20-25k winds and 8-12ft seas. If what you are looking at is not a Cal 2-30 then disregard this post.

Oops just noticed you are asking about Columbia, not Cal. Sorry.
