Confused again - I stood by the monster in Auckland harbour, I will dig around and try and find the photo, and the plaque talked about the BLACK MAGIC challenge and how those cheating yanks beat the kiwi boat because, in words attributed to Michael Fay on the plaque (from memory) "Dennis Conner came at this with a huge advantage - the only reason he won was because he didnt have to drag around tons of ballast under the boat"

OK now is the part of the thread where I get whiny and say stuff like...

"Why do these multihull guys always come here and try to trash our monohulls..."

"Hey kitty cat boy. This is the mono section. We don't like yer kaind 'roun' heah..."

And other stuf like that...

(Note tongue firmly in cheeck mode...)

I won't whine anymore as long as the cat guys will recognize that there are at least 187 reasons that monos are better - LOL....

189 - Mono's take abuse a lot better... ;-)

189 reasons? That's good enough for me. Anybody want to trade me a mono for my not so good cat? I feel like I have been beaten down!!!!!....

That's just an irresponsible skipper, boats should always have stuff put away

Interesting how you can make expert opinion from one single observation on a rented boat

Dave, the reason we chartered a BRAND NEW FP Belize was to evaluate a cat for possible purchase. And, as noted several times in this thread, this is supposed to be humorous.

And yes, our experience with this boat subsequently led to the purchase of a mono. For many, many reasons - many of which have been noted here!

Yeup and three or four members here just don't get it. Why don't you three or four go start your own 101 reasons a multi is better in your own forum and leave this be for the layed back none serious mono guys that are having a bit of fun. Talk about pouring Raining on the Party, c'mon guys, chill.

Of course the statement was made back then, when the boat was launched. I don't think he had access to a time machine.

192: Mono sailors always have a goal to aim at - trying to get just one speed record back from the multihulls.

Not in Auckland 44C, for 20 years multis have been trying to get the King of the Harbour title but have yet to beat the monos This is a race open to anything with sails, fastest wins.

One year one of those big French loony Trans-At Tri's (I love those and want one) got taken down by a much smaller mono. Tornados and some of the race Cats get close but as yet no cigar.

Actually thinking quickly, I'm almost willing to say that in the last 30 years monos have been getting faster faster than Multis but it would be bloody close. Baring in mind there were monos and multis capable of 30kts plus in the 70's. There have been 30kt+ multis for 100's of years actually.

And you can't just pick one boat, you have to think overall. If anyone on this board brings their mutli here we will kick it's arse in our mono, while insite of land. Make that NZ to Aussie and the opposite would apply. A brave statement some will be thinking but as I've actually been there and done it, I say it with confidence.

I wonder why they went to all the trouble of building the 90 foot AC challenger then, when they could have just grabbed one of these superfast mono's from Aukland harbour?

And you haven't answered my previous question, was Bruce Farr lying or perhaps hallucinating when he said it was the fastest mono on Earth?

That was an informed and fair test, sail on one boat (a charter cat at that) and then decide that ALL multis are the same.

How many mono's did you sail before you made a decision?
